INSIGHT: U.S. fertility rates just hit another record low. The general fertility rate fell to 53.1 births per 1,000 women in 2025, the lowest in CDC data going back to 1909. Down 23% since 2007. Down 1% from 2024. 3.6 million babies were born in the U.S. last year. The total fertility rate has fallen below 1.6, well under the 2.1 replacement threshold. Nearly half of U.S. women around age 30 are now childless, up from roughly a third a decade ago. The U.S. is not alone. Japan's population has been shrinking for over a decade. South Korea's population is already in decline. Germany would be shrinking without immigration. The UK projects deaths will outnumber births every year starting in 2026. The economic implications are significant. Social Security's trustees now project the total fertility rate will not return to 1.9 until 2050. Net immigration is on track to become the sole driver of U.S. population growth after 2030, per the CBO. GDP growth that was running at 2.5% is already slowing below 2%. The biggest driver is not economics alone. CDC data shows women are delaying children, not necessarily choosing to forgo them entirely. Births among women 30-34 rose 3% last year. The share of childless women ages 25-29 jumped from 50% in 2014 to 63% in 2024.
