WE HAVENT EVEN GONE THROUGH THE ONES WE HAVE YET GO THOUGH THE UNDESCRIBED SPECIMENS GATHERING DUST FIRST DECADES OLD FINDS LEFT WITHOUT ATTENTION I stfg yall cry about private collections but the problem is if we even had them they might not even get described
AquilaDraws (Commissions Open 3/10 Taken) 🇲🇽@VeliteAquila

This is the same mindset that keeps thousands of academically valuable artifacts in lockers and private collections. As someone who loves both archeology and paleontology, fuck off.

The giant remipede, native to the various interconnected, volcanically active salty caves that sit beneath the mountains of the Mediterranean. They are the top predators of such habitats and can reach an astonishing length of 20 cm.

Red Canara Barb (Hypselobarbus thomassi), easily one of the most striking large fish from the Western Ghats. As they mature, males turn a vivid red, an unforgettable sight in the wild. This video captures both juveniles and young adults Watch in HD: youtube.com/shorts/ji5vO_4…

While I think that person had a shit take I also think it reveals a fascinating aspect of paleoart that many people aren't conscious about: we use art to legitimize science, something that is probably unique to paleontology: a piece of paleoart can change radically...

@CPursall @Tomozaurus Someone in my replies yesterday said we were waiting for a “real” paleoartist to reconstruct it, which kind of perfectly encapsulates how uninformed and entitled some paleo fans are.

Genuinely how are quick moving species like those in Coluber and Masticophis able to process visual information so fast? When I approach a racer and it dashes full speed into the brush, how is it always able to perfectly navigate heavy cover with numerous obstacles while moving?

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the new life appearance of Muttaburrasaurus, and a lot of bold takes about how accurate the paper’s reconstruction is, but not a lot of pointing to the fossil evidence. So here’s a little thread on what we know about it. (1/14)

i wouldnt classify it as shrinkwrapping because that fenestra has flesh bulging outward but thats way too much and way to hard a line around the entire hole which its extra weird since the top temporal fenestra are fine just the lower ones are weird

There is a difference between bony landmarks and what is happening in the recon Even in animals with “shrinkwrapped” skulls the fenestra aren’t outlined There are subtle bony landmarks but nothing like the recon Not even in crocodiles are the fenestra super apparent

Dino fans, I need you to look at how visible the fenestrae can be in reptiles before saying the new Muttaburrasaurus reconstruction is shrink-wrapped. I also need you to remember that it was made under the guidance of the authors of the paper before saying it’s bad. It’s not.

A Mouthful of Sand! Awaous striatus, a sand goby found only in India’s river drainages. Takes mouthfuls of substrate, filters out algae and small invertebrates, spits the rest. Took until 2026 to get a proper genus review. Watch in HD: youtube.com/shorts/oxAB_c4…

@Edaphosaurus paleoart is powerful, it cannot be understated, there are fascinating animals out there that dont get much attention from casual enthusiasts because theyre depicted in a boring way, and there are fragmentary "glupshittos" that rose to fame because of amazing art

Very important to understand this: "Chronic illness is a reminder of our shared frailty and ultimate mortality. Many people want nothing to do with that, as though their avoidance of such discomfort will protect them from that destiny."
