@Garhom13 @tyler_austin55 Showing up to the Fourth Grade promotion is what's silly. It's only even a thing because so many parents feel coerced into going. Then the administrators pat themselves on the back for making parents happy. It's an Abilene paradox generated by those going along to go along.

@tyler_austin55 They're both actually right. Bob is right that, societally, we overcelebrate that which is normal, which cheapens true celebration. On the other hand, Helen is correct that he should go anyway, because parents should be there for their kids, even when it's silly.

@silent_v @Aella_Girl Yes, but *also* analyze the financials. Many amateur traders want to do the former but not the latter and end up mistaking riding a bubble with superior performance.

Peter Lynch advocated for this approach in his 1989 book Beat The Street. The example he gave was L’eggs. He was poring over financial reports when his wife came back from the store raving about the convenience of buying L’eggs over traditional panty hose. Unique knowledge doesn’t have to be insider trading.

@reddit_lies @Hegemol29052 One quibble. They are not 5x more efficient than gas, unless you are only viewing the end stage. When also considering the power plant efficiency required to generate the electricity that runs them, they are roughly equivalent in efficiency to gas.

Heat pumps work to both heat and cool homes, and they're up to 5x more efficient at heating homes than gas or electricity. Meaning you'd actually consume less electricity and produce less CO2 in winter, but you won't switch, because your hubris has blinded you.

@PMCMex @SensibleFascist You state the Hispanics have claim to the southwest since they were there first. That is wrong. Some Americans of Hispanic descent have (had) claim, and they were treated fairly. The conclusion you should draw is the southwest is American, to include many Hispanic patriots.

@Tu_Tasty @SensibleFascist Why? Hispanics were here before anybody else. Furthermore, much of our ancestry is native to this continent. I promote coexistence. You promote rivalry. I’m simply defending Hispanic identity which is the foundation of the Southwest

“But but but the southwest United States used to be Mexican!” No, it didn’t. Before America claimed it, the Southwest territories were a seemingly infinite stretch of empty desert home only to a few scattered tribes of natives and some port cities like Los Angeles. The only reason it “used to be part of Mexico” is because it was claimed territory of the Spanish Empire. When Spain left, it just automatically transferred over to the newly independent Mexico. As it was almost entirely uninhabited though they had no real claim to it and were entirely unable to defend it. Thus, America conquered and legally annexed it with the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This claim that we just have to accept infinity brown people in our country because part of our country “used to be Mexico” is a subversive lie created by the left to make white Americans ashamed of their history and justify the replacement. In reality, over 95% of Hispanic Americans migrated here after the southwest became America, with the vast majority of even those coming within my lifetime.

@SensibleFascist The southwest is Hispanic and Catholic. The routes, the ranches, the cattle, the fortresses, the names and small towns and developments were all Hispanic. Before 1810 there were exactly 0 Anglos living in the southwest If Hispanics don’t have claim to it, neither do you.

@2haveandhavenot @charlesmurray Also, is poetry written by Grok worth reading? Let's imagine that AI becomes better at poetry than even the best human poet (something that isn't far-fetched), and its daily output is greater than the sum of all poets. Why read human poetry at all? I prefer the worst human poet.

AI for any 'ground-pounding' type research, (the price of lace Nell Gwyn would have paid to make a gown, the numbers of persons afflicted with polio before the vaccine, etc) ... Using AI to rewrite your text? I'd feel dodgy there. As in trying to cheat on an intellectual or prosaic expression. Perish the thought you'd be comfortable doing a poetic rewrite using AI. Are you the type of communicator that takes liberally from others, or are you inventive, unique and singular in your writing, photography, public speaking, creative delivery? Elon Musk once published poetry written by Grok. It was not bad. It was not stellar though. Puerile a bit. Is passion available from AI? Angst? Rage? Uncertainty, despair? Gut out your own communication and rely on AI to do the research assistant work. @cremieuxrecueil

What many people don't understand about writing is that it does not consist of putting in words something you have thought through. It consists of thinking through the thing you're writing about by the act of writing--and rewriting and rewriting and rewriting. I have had the privilege of knowing several brilliant writers. I have known only one who wrote brilliantly in his first draft. James Q. Wilson. So if you're on his level, you don't need AI to do your writing. If you're not, using AI forecloses insights that can set your text apart.
Crémieux@cremieuxrecueil

I do not think there is *any* evidence that AI helps people with difficulties expressing themselves to get their otherwise good ideas out there I do not think there will *ever* be any evidence that's the case, because it's not true. People who can't write aren't having big ideas

"It's not society's job to get you employment or a wife" But it kind of is? If a man is not allowed to participate in a social enterprise, given no access to the fruits of its economy or its women, then he's not a member of it and does not have any obligations to it

@SmilingKylan @JackPosobiec He had just swallowed his not-insignificant stash on tape, so the fentanyl was still metabolizing throughout his body. However he clearly met all of the clinical indicators for a fentanyl overdose (respiratory depression, muscle rigidity, and “wooden chest syndrome”).

@JackPosobiec The homework I did said he was under the typical fentanyl overdose limit and meth could actually suppress some of the effects of fentanyl. I know it sounds hard to believe but it's possible that he didn't die of a fentanyl overdose...

This is exactly what came out at trial. The wannabe MMA fighter claimed that Chauvin blood choked Floyd but upon under further questioning was forced to admit that a blood choke requires pressure on *both* sides of the neck The state had to change their whole case mid-trial

@JackPosobiec I have never seen a knee on neck used as a choke submission in MMA or BJJ , by the way, just sayin

@physicsgeek The only crime here is your ignorance of the case. The police handled things more-or-less by the book, which is impressive when you have an angry mob harassing you while you're trying to do a difficult job. But I guess you would know how that is as a physics geek yourself.

Whether or not you think that George Floyd would have died from the overdose of fentanyl (or whatever), I still think his handling by the police was a crime. That said, he was a drug-addicted domestic abuser criminal and building statues in his honor, naming plazas after him, or celebrating his life in any way is a sign of both mental illness and moral rot.

@jamesawhiite It doesn't matter. Time is just a fake number. Being consistent is more important than 12:00 being exactly in the middle of the day. Just start eating lunch at 10AM, and wake up at 5AM instead of 7AM if you think the time is off by 2 hours.

It’s imperative that we revert to STANDARD, not Daylight time, for two reasons, one of which you may have never considered. You know the first: solar noon is closest to 12 o’clock all year. That means an equal number of hours before and after noon each day. This also means earlier sunrises which are significantly better for establishing a healthy circadian rhythm. The second reason is that nearly ONE THIRD of US counties are in the wrong timezone. A significant swath of the country isn’t only an artificial hour ahead because of daylight time… but TWO HOURS ahead of true solar time. Year-round daylight time, especially without recalibrating time zones, would establish this error permanently, affecting millions of Americans. We should be letting the Sun dictate the day the way God made it. Arbitrary, artificial tampering would be worse for us all. Fix the time zones and affix standard time.

@justforfun1328 @xwanyex Manny Machado stomping on ankles is the right way to play the game. Jose Canseco juicing up is the right way to play the game. What you're missing is that winning occurs within the framework of rules. And rules are downstream of culture.

@xwanyex As a baseball guy, I actually have to disagree with you here 😂 - in terms of the analogy, I just think it’s not the same. The “right” way to play the game is literally winning. That’s really all that matters honestly. There is no virtue in losing.
