I almost fell off the trail into a ravine to get this @Adobe event info in your hands, so please give it a watch. I'll be presenting at 2 different events in Feb - so much fun to talk about!

@yacineMTB The very-real factor of digital overload is a factor. I'm sure I'm not the only tech worker that goes WAY out of my way to get away from screens & very much find a full-time, full-immersion device highly undesirable.

I definitely agree with you there, and love a good bus. Original reason I wrote that article (like 12 years ago originally before moving blogs) was a DC friend complaining that DC has the "worst metro system". I took it upon myself to give her a list of cities that couldn't even muster one up at all.

It is time to stop ranking US cities based on how much rail they have. Rail is needed in dense corridors, but that’s not where we’ve built a lot of it. It made some sense when we were moving full trains at rush hour, but that’s no longer the case. … 1/thread

@aaron_renn @humantransit Meanwhile Indy is the 3rd largest city in the country with no metro or light rail. opsinventor.com/list-of-larges…

The Atlanta Beltline being this packed with people at 7pm on a TUESDAY is just a delight. Every restaurant along the trail is packed, people everywhere socializing and being humans together. The dichotomy of this experience against Atlanta Freeway Hell just boggles the mind.

New BeltLine crossing painted 👀 Not as visible from western approaching drivers however, arguably those who pose the most risk. Past time this block & much of the street closed to drivers.

When Mitch Daniels was governor of Indiana, his most visionary idea was a new outerbelt for Indianapolis. INDOT actually studied the idea. It was too early to build such a thing, but without planning and ROW protection, it's can't be built when it is needed.

@JenMsft @PaperDoll77 It was something all of us Linux users have had for a while, that it seemed SO natural to bring to Windows. I use tabbed explorer windows constantly

Data centers aren't uniquely energy-hungry. One aluminum smelter draws as much power as all of Nashville. Utilities used to build power plants to meet that demand but today, regulations & litigation make that almost impossible. We need more power plants, not fewer data centers.

@artem_kalt @svpino Sweet. I've got one very similar to that, except with a display. I do like nerding out on how much power my devices are drawing, but it also helps with debugging the "is this thing even charging" questions, esp when traveling international

I don't like the power cable that comes with the Framework 13 Pro. It's one of those 3-piece cables. Thick, inflexible, ugly cable that takes a ton of space in your backpack and you really don't want to take out anywhere. (The laptop has an infinite battery life, so this is less of a problem, but still). I bought an Anker charger, and now I'm convinced this is the best charger I've ever seen and used. I'm using this charger now even with my MacBook Air. I thought Apple's charger with magsafe was great, but this is better.

It's a bit of a hike for you, but there are two stations in Glacier National Park on the Amtrak Empire Builder, with hotels originally built by the Great Northern Railway. It is a positively EPIC experience to do a place like that entirely car-free. (we hit Glacier with the family on a Amtrak rail-pass lap of the USA we did a few years back - please also appreciate my son's Amtrak shirt, he's the biggest railfan ever)

@pitt_urban @himbo_urbanist Harpers Ferry is truly special - so many great hikes, rafting, the town itself is wild. Plus, an epic day-trip is taking your bike out to Harpers on the train & then riding the C&O canal back into DC.

@the_transit_guy I was just down there working at Adobe in Lehi. What's fascinating is how geographically-constrained the whole metro area is. It can grow with no bounds north-south, but there is no settlement more than ~5mi from the center axis due to the mountains & lake.

@GergelyOrosz It's true though - I spend more time now vetting whether or not a technical article looks like it was really written by a person or not. That's before I even determine if it was written by a smart person.

AI - in theory - should make writing easier, thus expressing ideas should be a lot easier. And yet, I don't see all that much more things that are worthwhile to read. Sure, there's a lot more junk. But I don't see more interesting eng blogs, personal tech-related blogs etc. What is going on? (Is this a discoverability issue? Or are people / teams not writing/sharing all that much more, indeed?)

@gregorykennedy It doesn't help that Apple and Spotify have generally-terrible search, so podcast discovery revolves around an exact keyword match - something AI slop can absolutely accomplish

Someone blocked me because of this. But here is the data. It's not that some day, in the distant future, AI is going to flood the world with half-baked content. It's flooding the world with it now. And some of it is going to outperform people-generated content.
Gregory Kennedy tweet media
Gregory Kennedy@gregorykennedy

Why would anyone be surprised by this? I've already seen the testing where AI beats human writers. It's unclear whether originality and craftsmanship ultimately have any commercial value at all.

RAM/SSD prices are psycho, I needed a new personal hackmachine to complement my FW13 work box. Took @FrameworkPuter's advice and got a 2nd-hand absolute BRUTE of an HP Zbook (64GB/1.5TB SSD, H-class CPU, etc) for $600. Putting used machines back to work is definitely satisfying.
