In my role at @beehiiv, I've had the unique ability to talk to thousands of media operators over the last 3.5 years (not an exaggeration!) I've spoken to people who were starting from absolute zero, who then grew to millions of emails and successful exits. I literally convinced one of the most well known newsletters in the world to start their newsletter. I can't say who, but I privately take all the credit for their astounding success. I've advised large media companies with enormous audiences who didn't know how to turn their traditional marketing channel into a content-first product. I currently also run a successful media company with my wife in South Carolina (we just signed a 6-month deal with a local sports team!) and am always attempting to experiment with new channels and products to see what works and how to execute each differently. All of this to say, in the last 2 weeks AI has evolved so much that I feel for the first time a genuine tearing of my brain cells trying to understand what it all means for the future of content and of media. The world tomorrow will be unrecognizably different than the world today, the world you have grown to know and love. Controlling the narrative, distribution, and funnel of your content and your audience is the only way you will be able to position yourself successfully against a sea of AI and compute. The world is changing. If you want to continue producing content at all, you need to make sure your foundation is durable. This means for you the creator and for you the media giant. No one is immune to what is coming. If your audience and funnel aren't durable, you might not make it. I've lost a bit of love and ambition for TDIT. 771 videos, 100+ hours of content, a weekly episode for over 60 weeks. But losing steam. Life is so full, sometimes things feel right and sometimes they don't. Sitting at 767 subscribers with very little motivation to drive additional growth. I could easily 10x with effort but I'd rather put effort into other channels/businesses that make me more money or are more meaningful. I got to 10,000 @LinkedIn followers last week and didn't even notice. I've been on a LinkedIn and social break of sorts. A sabbatical. Or maybe detox is a better word. The daily grind of "posting just to post" caught up to me. I’m rewatching all the Die Hard movies and Bruce Willis’ receding hairlines is all I can see in the first 3 movies but by the 4th movie (Live Free or Die Hard) he accepts his fate and goes full bald. He simply looks better bald.
