I have a family member who lives 20 minutes outside downtown Minneapolis in an apartment complex. Said half of the residents are Somalians here illegally. All of them on full welfare with rent paid. Everybody knows they all voted as well. She pays $1600 a month to live there. And she has a job. They do not (at least a taxable job) and live there for free. Why are people upset about what ICE is doing right now? There are 100,000 Somalians living in Twin Cities illegally. All getting welfare and rent. Why are hotels in NYC filled with immigrants and why is our government paying for it? Why are they allowed welfare without proof of citizenship? I'm far from a right winger. I generally don't care about politics or pay any attention. This just doesn't make any sense and anybody who argues for protecting this in any way is just an idiot. 99% of Americans would vote against illegal immigrants getting government assistance. Especially full rent payments. But they still do? Why? This is crazy. And people are still complaining about what is happening in MN right now? This is idiotic.

Ask anyone from outside Dallas to name the great Dallas fortunes. They'll quickly say Crow. Hunt. Perot. Jones. They won't know the name Caruth. William Caruth was the original Dallas real estate mogul The Caruths owned 30,000 acres of Dallas. Roughly the size of two Manhattans. And they built their dynasty by holding on when everyone else was selling. Take a close look at this aerial shot from 1974. We're looking Northeast. In the background, you can see the "Gold Towers" of Campbell Center rising up. The same towers that became icons of the 1980s oil boom and the TV show Dallas. NorthPark Center is at the top left. But in the foreground? A massive working farm. Right in the middle of the city. This is the legendary Caruth Homeplace. To understand this photo, you need to understand the family. William Caruth arrived in Dallas in 1848 with $1,000 borrowed from his father. He opened a general store and started buying land in the 1850s. His strategy was simple. Early settlers had been granted 640-acre headrights by the state but couldn't afford to farm them. Caruth had cash. They didn't. He bought their land for $5 to $10 an acre. At their peak, the Caruths owned land stretching from near Downtown all the way north to (what is now) Forest Lane. From Preston Road east to White Rock Lake. If you drive up Central Expressway between Downtown and LBJ, almost everything you see out your window was once Caruth land. Between 1900 and 1920, they sold the eastern portion of their holdings. The land became Vickery Place, Belmont, and Lower Greenville. But the massive northern tract? The land in this photo? They held it for another 50 years. So why was there still a farm here in '74? While developers scrambled to buy land as Dallas expanded north in the 50s and 60s, the Caruths were famous for one thing: They didn't sell. W.W. "Will" Caruth Jr. was a brilliant land manager. Instead of selling the family legacy, he leased it. The best example is NorthPark Mall. Before it opened in 1965, that land was a Caruth cotton field. Will didn't sell that land to developer Ray Nasher. He signed a 99-year lease. The mall got built. The family kept the underlying rights for decades. Cash flow today. Appreciation forever. Ray Nasher eventually bought out the lease in 1999, 34 years in. Think about how much value the Caruths extracted before letting go. The large open tract in this photo was the family's "Homeplace", the heart of their operations. Even as skyscrapers and highways rose around them, they continued to live there. They ran cattle. They farmed cotton. Shortly after this photo was taken, the pressure became too great. The land transformed into the "Caruth Homeplace" residential community, a zero-lot line community where homes today sell for millions. But the original 1872 farmhouse still stands. It's tucked inside the development. It now serves as headquarters for the Communities Foundation of Texas. The Caruths understood something most landowners don't. Selling is a one-time event. Leasing is a perpetual income stream. They played a 100-year game while everyone else played for quick flips. William Caruth borrowed $1,000 and started paying $5 an acre in the 1850s. That land is now worth billions. And because they held it for so long, that wealth now powers one of the largest community foundations in Texas.
