Christopher Nolan is considered a great director today because cinema is terrible now. Back when he first came out 20-25 years ago he was just another ok director. No one thought he was one of the best. He was just decent, among other decent and some much better directors. There are two ways to rise in the world. Do good work. Or wait until things collapse and they will call you great.

That’s literally half the problem.
Nobody would be caring so much if the game already wasn’t getting near perfect ratings across the board to the point where it feels unnatural. Especially if you’ve watched the movie- I mean played the game.

Mixtape—which I loved, because I’m a paid off journalist—is both producing a lot of interesting discourse (90s exhaustion, assumptions about “collective” experiences, etc.) and making the absolute worst people online extremely mad. Helluva game.

It's an industry plant that all the major "journalists" gave a perfect 10/10 out of nowhere. In reality its not really a game much at all. It's pretty cringe nostalgia slop for redditors who never grew up past being a teenager.
It gets a bit deeper when you find out that this game is published by the daughter of Larry Ellison, Oracle co-founder with a net worth of about $200 billion.
It's being presented as an "indie game" when in reality it's being backed with more money than God and more than likely being pushed this hard by paid media shills.
Something stinks. It reeks like an industry plant.

This is such a fascinating object study.
So, if you're a leftist, games are *tremendously* appealing, because gaming has, built-in, the idea of making a new reality to suit your whims and preferences. It's so appealing because you finally get to live out the "what-if?" without having pesky details like "If we gulag/wall all the farmers, what will we eat?" get in the way.
But, games also showcase that choices matter, have consequences, and that some choices might actually be better than others, which is ✨problematic✨.
Put these two facts in a mixer for a few years, and you get """games""" like Mixtape. Where everything just magically works out no matter what you do.
That's not a game, it's wish fulfillment. Masturbation has more utility.

I'm sorry, but Nolan casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy has completely killed all immersion in this epic for me.
Homer’s Odyssey was never some diverse melting pot. Helen was a fair skinned, golden-haired Spartan queen, daughter of Zeus, the ultimate beauty in an epic built by European blood and gods. Yet i'm meant to believe her face was the one who launched a 1,000 ships?
It's very sad to see Nolan go down this route. Ancient Greece wasn’t full of Sub Saharans, yet they’re flooding Ithaca with dei and tokenism. This destroys what could’ve been a incredible Epic. Tragic.
