Wyndham Clark could not have handled his victory interview on NBC any better. Said all the right things, perfectly.

Bam @Wyndham_Clark does it again!! Absolutely love this. Great guy!!! To all the golf fans that want to hate on a real one winning the US open get a life So what if he bashed a couple lockers. He apologized and paid for it. You’ve probably never competed for anything in your life. All Real Americans should be celebrating this. LFG!!!

@ProGolfCritic @USGA @usopengolf Final Four MVP and National Champion. Damn I must think pretty highly of myself. Typical Duke fan caring more about what players do after they leave college and that’s because no program has ever done less with more. Let’s see that diploma

@UNCGuy3 @USGA @usopengolf What else needs to be said? You don’t think enough of yourself so instead you pick a below avg player that never made it. Speaks volumes. 🤷🏽‍♂️

@SethDavisHoops Only apologized and paid for damages after being pressured to do so. That isn’t owning it, that’s damage control

Give me a guy who cares too much, loses his temper, shows his flaws, owns his mistakes and somehow, some way, finds a way to come through in the end. I like my heroes flawed! Consider me a Wydham Clark fan.
Bobby@BobbyWilson1004

For those that keep asking why people dislike Wyndham Clark: Fans dislike Wyndham Clark primarily due to his history of on-course outbursts and temper issues, which many see as disrespectful to the game, venues, and traditions of golf. Key Incidents Fueling the Dislike • 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont: After missing the cut, Clark damaged two lockers in the clubhouse in a fit of anger. This led to him being suspended/banned from the prestigious club, widespread media backlash, and fan outrage over the lack of respect for a historic venue. He has since apologized, called it a “terrible” mistake not reflective of who he is, paid for damages, and expressed a desire to win back fans. • Driver-throwing at the 2025 PGA Championship: He flung his driver in frustration after a poor shot, nearly hitting a volunteer and damaging sponsor signage. This came shortly before the Oakmont incident and drew comparisons to other poor behavior (e.g., worse than Rory McIlroy’s tee marker incident in some fans’ eyes). These events painted him as immature or entitled, especially given his relative success (2023 U.S. Open winner) but inconsistent major performances otherwise. Golf traditionally values composure and respect for the course/clubhouse, so such visible anger stands out negatively. Other Contributing Factors • Perceived arrogance or cockiness: Some fans feel his confidence (post-U.S. Open comments about shrinking PGA Tour fields, for example) comes across as smug, especially when results haven’t always matched the attitude. He has a strong ball-striking game and mental health story (overcoming struggles), but interviews and demeanor rub people the wrong way. • Recent rules/play situations: At the ongoing 2026 U.S. Open (as of recent reports), a relief drop on the 17th hole (involving loose impediments and a TV platform) was seen by critics as gamesmanship, even though rules officials cleared it. This adds to the “villain” narrative for some. • General polarization: Golf fans often crave “vanilla” pros; Clark’s fiery personality makes him a lightning rod. Some love the edge (he can be entertaining and competitive when hot), while others see him as a “spoiled brat” or unlikeable. Clark has acknowledged the backlash, worked on his mental game (including with a sports psychologist after team interventions), and is actively trying to show a better side—being more outgoing and competitive without the meltdowns. Some articles defend him as a needed “anti-hero” with personality in an otherwise bland tour, and there’s evidence of growing support or redemption arcs among fans. In short, it’s mostly the temper and perceived lack of class that turned many against him, amplified by social media and golf’s etiquette standards. In short; he’s a brokedick.

I get Wyndham Clark isn't so popular, Scottie Scheffler is, he'd win the Grand Slam etc etc And that some fans just want to see a contest, but the jeers for Clark, an American leading his national championship, just don't sit right with me

@cappybagels @clevnation @KVanValkenburg Wow you’re really moving the target here. I’ll bite though. I don’t support wife beaters at all, and I don’t know if New Yorkers care about how the locker situation was handled. I just said that I do Brain works fine and with that response, I see why you cheer for Wyndham

@TomChomicz @BryanSchrempf @KVanValkenburg It’s well reported that he only “apologized” and paid for damages after Oakmont said he was not welcome the next time around. Before that he told the media that he’d like to “move on”. He played great this week and deserved to win but that doesn’t make him a good person

@BryanSchrempf @KVanValkenburg Then it’s a good thing he’s apologized multiple times publicly, sent the club a letter and sent the member a bottle of bourbon.

People who stuck around showing Wyndham some love. Some of the first big cheers of the day. “We love you, Wyndham!” “We all make mistakes!” “Hell of a round, man.”

@Spreadapedia Casual golf fan take. These clubs have so much history and the membership is understandably reluctant to give up their courses. The lockers were originals. This is worse than anything you can do on the course, except maybe hurting a volunteer, which Wyndham also almost did

@CPowers14 I think we can all agree that destruction of property and generally acting like a petulant child is much worse than taking a bad ruling on the chin (US Open last year) and legally hunting

@Golfweek_Dusek Wyndham is already a horrible steward of the USGA and golf in general. I’d be concerned if NY fans weren’t booing him

Between the terrible behavior during the 2025 Ryder Cup and now fans booing Wyndham Clark at Shinnecock Hills, it hasn’t been a great look for New York golf fans over the last year.

Cops are booting people for shouting “Don’t choke Wyndham!” as he sets up to his shot. This young man got bounced for saying it before Clark’s tee shot at No. 4
