@Honeyfarsafi We’re living in a digital dictatorship? Albert Ojwang tweeted now he’s dead. The Communications Bill isn't even law, but young people are already being arrested, surveilled, and silenced. What will the full law look like?

Janet Makena, GBV Coordinator from Bungoma, guided participants through an insightful session on SGBV and the law, tracing the background of the Sexual Offences Act and the broader legal framework that protects survivors. The session emphasized that while the Constitution of Kenya remains the supreme law, it lays the foundation for various laws and policies that explicitly prohibit #GBV. These include the Protection Against Domestic Violence Act (2015), the Penal Code (Chapter C3 of the Laws of Kenya), the Sexual Offences Act, and the Children Act, among other frameworks. Through this discussion, participants deepened their understanding of how these laws work together to safeguard rights, strengthen accountability, and provide pathways to justice for survivors. Strengthening knowledge of the law remains a critical step in empowering Women Human Rights Defenders to effectively support survivors and demand accountability. #AccessToJustice #EndGBV #WHRDs #KnowTheLaw #JusticeForSurvivors @AICS_Nairobi @unwomenkenya @PHRKenya @bettyokero

Building from yesterday’s session, where participants from the three counties convened and strengthened their skills in drafting memoranda for submission to duty bearers, today’s engagement took a practical turn. The morning featured a mock public participation forum, where different teams presented their memoranda and engaged in a simulated public hearing process. This hands-on approach created a powerful learning space, allowing Women Human Rights Defenders to practice how to effectively articulate community issues, present evidence-based demands, and engage duty bearers with confidence. The exercise underscored the importance of understanding existing legal frameworks, particularly on public participation, budget processes, and gender-responsive budgeting. These are critical tools for influencing decision-making and ensuring that community voices, especially those of survivor's are meaningfully represented. Strengthening these capacities is key to empowering WHRDs to move beyond awareness into action, shaping policies and resource allocation from a people-centered perspective. #PublicParticipation #GenderResponsiveBudgeting #WHRDs #AccessToJustice #WomenDefenders #JusticeForSurvivors @AICS_Nairobi @aics_it @unwomenkenya @PHRKenya @bettyokero

The discussions further unpacked the referral pathway by @bettyokero, highlighting critical gaps that must be addressed to ensure survivors receive holistic and timely support. Participants identified four key components: medical care, legal and security support, psychosocial support, and social, economic, and inclusion services. Each stage demands specific, coordinated interventions to truly respond to the needs of survivors. At the medical level, the focus goes beyond treatment to comprehensive clinical care within the critical 72-hour window, including emergency contraception, STI management, forensic evidence collection, proper documentation through the PRC form, and psychological first aid. On legal and security, the role of gender desks was emphasized, ensuring survivors can access OB reporting, legal aid, representation, and protection or rescue services. A key takeaway was clear: an effective referral pathway must be practical and accessible. This means having updated contacts, clear linkages, and strong coordination between service providers to avoid delays and gaps in support. #AccessToJustice #EndGBV #WHRDs #ReferralPathways #JusticeForSurvivors @AICS_Nairobi @aics_it @unwomenkenya @PHRKenya

Day 2 of the Women Convening began with a deep dive into existing legal frameworks, starting with the Constitution and the protections it guarantees for survivors. Through the lens of Women Human Rights Defenders, the conversations unpacked how these rights are experienced in practice, highlighting both progress and the gaps that continue to hinder access to justice. A key focus of the day was understanding intersectionality and its impact on Gender-Based Violence. The discussions emphasized that individuals do not exist within a single identity. Instead, overlapping factors such as age, gender, disability, geography, and economic status shape lived experiences and influence access to justice, services, and decision-making spaces. This reflection challenged participants to think more critically and inclusively in their advocacy, ensuring that responses to GBV are grounded in the diverse realities of survivors. As the convening continues, the commitment remains clear: to strengthen knowledge, amplify voices, and build a more inclusive and responsive justice system for all. #AccessToJustice #EndGBV #WHRDs #Intersectionality #WomenDefenders #HakiNiYetu #JusticeForSurvivors @bettyokero @PHRKenya

We progressed into discussions, with participants breaking into county teams to reflect on constitutional enforcement in their contexts. The conversations were anchored on three key pillars: Protection and Security, Equality and Inclusion, and Response and Management. Each group explored how these principles are applied on the ground, identifying both promising practices and persistent gaps affecting survivors’ access to justice. Through this approach, Women Human Rights Defenders shared practical insights, highlighting realities within their communities and proposing context-driven solutions. The discussions reinforced the need for stronger systems, inclusive approaches, and coordinated responses that truly center survivors. #AccessToJustice #EndGBV #WHRDs #WomenDefenders #EqualityAndInclusion #JusticeForSurvivors
