This post is wildly misleading. Capital gains tax is not a separate 47% tax slapped on your entire investment. It’s simply income tax paid on the profit you make when you sell an asset for more than you bought it for. And in Australia, individuals already get a 50% CGT discount on assets held longer than 12 months — meaning only half the gain is added to taxable income. So someone on the top marginal rate is not paying 47% on the full gain. The money you originally invested was taxed as income, yes — but the capital gain itself is new income created from the increase in value of the asset. By that logic, wages, dividends, bank interest and business profits would all be “double taxation” too. Also, nobody is “stealing” from investors. Australia has had capital gains tax since the 1980s under both Labor and Coalition governments because taxing investment profits is a standard part of modern tax systems worldwide. You can debate whether the settings are optimal, but pretending all investment profit should be tax-free while ordinary workers pay tax on every pay cheque is hardly a fair argument.
