I’ve been getting this reply a lot, and it misses the point of my post.
Yes, the Ivies require more than just standardized tests. But a reason these selective schools brought their testing requirements back is because the “other things” they relied on—“soft”variables, such as extracurriculars and essays—did the opposite of furthering “equity.” They helped high-income applicants and disadvantaged talented low-income applicants! Consider, for example, the case of Dartmouth:

1 in 5 NYC public school students are Black, but at Stuy - our most prestigious high school - 3 of ~800 incoming Freshmen are Black. We urgently need state legislation to modify the admissions process. A single test should never be only factor deciding who gets in & who doesn’t.

Tony's chart doesn't show the bottom 80%. I am attaching the relevant CBO chart. It shows that after taxes and transfers, real income of the bottom 20% doubled since 1979. Doubled! After adjusting for inflation!

I believe there needs to be a immersion program for activists who live, work, and/or went to college in hyper blue safe spaces to spend time in competitive and lean-GOP communities where most people didn't go to college. Like backpacking across Europe, but for American politics.

VERY MUCH of the achievement variation in classrooms is WITHIN school, not BETWEEN schools.
i.e. an intractable problem for most teachers everywhere - no, they cannot be reasonably expected to "differentiate" it away
This new study has essentially replicated prior achievement spread results, this time specifically in a "rural, low-socioeconomic primary school."

The authors of a new article found that reading achievement at the end of 1st grade within one low-income school ranged from the lowest level of reading achievement to 3rd grade and beyond. In practical terms, about 25% of children in one classroom were still struggling to put letter sounds together to form words, while about 20% are fluent readers with increasing comprehension. There's no teacher in the world who can create one lesson plan that meets both groups' needs (and everyone in between). Ability grouping is a must for competent teaching--even in the earliest grades. Not about anything in particular but you really should be "over" shipping culture by 18, it should be more of a taboo. Many promising young women stunt their growth after getting sucked into Tumblr/AO3 as teenagers, they simply never learn about narrative on any other level
