With the town of Canton, MA deeply impacted by the continued divisiveness of the Karen Read / John O'Keefe trial, I'd like to share a little about someone who had a positive, lasting impact in the town of Canton and the thousands of students he educated - a humble, popcorn-popping, Sofia Loren-loving Canton High math teacher by the name of Mr. Martin J. Badoian. Mr. Badoian was the type of teacher known to challenge students or "mathletes" as they were called.  He just taught differently --- wiring young minds and preparing them for life.  Mathletes at times were required to do the math in their heads.  Paying attention in class and taking many notes were a given as mathletes had no math books nor were ever notified in advance of when it was test day. On those "nerve-wracking" test days, mathletes were permitted to stay after school to take their time, allowing them to carefully dissect and review their answers, not rush. They had to show all their work and what led to their result.  He didn't "grade" on whether they got the correct answer, but rather assessed how they thought through the problem. He taught mathletes to respectfully collaborate in solving problems - with of course the added teen bantering - because as many learned, there were sometimes more ways than one to approach a problem.  I'm sure some of the more "genius" mathletes even challenged him a time or two :).  Math was a team sport in his classroom, and he was the coach. Mr. Badoian didn't just teach math....he instilled confidence and focus. Despite some being "Revenge of the Nerd pocket-protecting type math geeks" who were viciously bullied and harassed, mathletes were told they were special and would go on to be leaders. In fact, sometimes in class not a single math problem was done because mathletes were given a stern "motivational lecture" to not focus on the distractions of other students' criticisms, popularity contests or engage in teen wars / drama ....he needed mathletes to just focus on the math and be leaders.  Simply put, his students had problems to solve. Unfortunately, Mr. Badoian passed away in 2018, but his mathematical legacy lives on through his students - many have gone on to be leaders worldwide (NASA Engineers, Mathematics Teachers / PhDs, Doctors, STEM and Finance Professionals, to name a few). Mr Badoian was a fighter for the things he believed in (much I'm sure math-related) - and perhaps he instilled a little bit of that in his mathletes well.  While the Canton "streets" were small compared to the big cities - for the most part a simpler way of life - he prepared them. He fought to make them the best they could be. I have reflected at times over this past year about Canton and what a teacher, like Mr. Badoian, would advise a mathlete, teacher colleague or mentee do if he/she, while despite initially believing one thing, carefully watched / dissected the 1st Karen Read/John O'Keefe trial - understood the math, science presented from a local angle (including roads, distances, cultural / geographical dynamics, etc.) - and came to different conclusion. Would it be worth discussing my viewpoint given what was later observed - the divisiveness, outrage and harassment associated with the trial?  Was this the type of thing one should "not bring up at the Thanksgiving table" or close friends because it's going to start an all out war?  Should I stay "quiet" to respect the judicial process?  Given the finality of the trial and ongoing events, I suspect Mr. Badoian would tell his mathlete, colleague, mentee to relentlessly challenge the seemingly prevailing thought despite the obstacles (via an open dialogue like a math problem breaking it down bit by bit)....share with other detail-oriented individuals so that they could independently assess/evaluate the data....and dare I say perhaps even respectfully share his/her thoughts with others maybe not as math-inclined.  Because of course a math geek loves a good math problem and loves talking numbers --- and the healing of a community is worth fighting for. So, here's a start (with a little background)....watch the Karen Read/John O'Keefe trial 2 (and perhaps trial 1 / all pre-trial hearings for a bit more color), importantly, without the influence of social media or commentary.  There has been (and continues to be) misinformation spread online and into the local community. Some information spreading is not fully contextualized - resulting in harassment most notably for the family/friends of John O'Keefe (the victim), witnesses and other community members --- and it's having continuing impacts even after the trial's conclusion.  Reviewing the evidence requires a fine-tuned "unemotional, unbiased" focus much like a weatherman reads his charts looking at all inputs to come to a conclusion before reporting on the evening news.  Write down all numbers.  Focus on: the vehicle data and the timelines surrounding the vehicle (including the car's Power On/Off Events) vs. locations / distances, times surrounding and where witnesses were located and evidence found (taillight), travel distances, camera timestamps, cell phone data (including GPS data, signal strength, battery phone temperature, phone camera), DNA figures along with additional scientific data and apply the logic if/then statements learned from high school geometry class. The numbers don't lie. To the mathletes, math, STEM geeks of the world (or friends of) out there, feel free to share. I'm sure this community would appreciate your intellect in the process of healing.  Because behind all the publicity associated with this trial is a real community with real people that is perhaps in part suffering at the hands of misinformation and missed details by the "perceived majority."  Healing, in part, can only come from open, respectful communication (both ways)....perhaps, there may be not be agreement --- but the hope to find common ground. I've included some links below so you can learn about one of the greatest math teachers of all time and about John O'Keefe, a Boston police officer and self-described "funcle" (fun uncle) - both valued, respected members of the Canton / Norfolk County / Massachusetts community. ....And to Mr. Badoian, if you are "reading" this from above, I never got that chance to let you know how much you inspired me....BUT I was doing what I think you would appreciate and what we both shared a united passion for...solving math problems. Mr. Badoian was a special teacher in Canton, MA who helped mold math students - many likely able to unemotionally dissect the Karen Read trial to assess timelines, distances, video/car data, etc. We must continue to advocate for STEM education/collaborative problem-solving.
