📍Sudan | We are heartbroken by the death of Um Salama Mohammed Abdullah, a dedicated and compassionate volunteer from the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS). She tragically lost her life on March 5th, when a shell struck Al-Dilling Hospital while she was performing her humanitarian duties in the maternity ward. We call upon all parties to the conflict to respect and protect healthcare and humanitarian workers, as well as to safeguard the facilities where they carry out their life-saving work.

Today, it’s a sad day for nuclear disarmament with the expiration of #NewSTART. But, as always in dark times, there is hope on the way. The Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons #TPNW is a beacon of hope. A majority of the world’s countries have now signed or ratified it.

The New START Treaty, which represented a significant step to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons, expires tomorrow. I make an urgent appeal not to allow this instrument to lapse without seeking to ensure a concrete and effective follow-up. The current situation demands that everything possible be done to avert a new arms race. We must urgently replace the logic of fear and distrust with a shared ethic that can guide choices on behalf of the common good and make peace a heritage safeguarded by all.

Today UN Secretary General @antonioguterres announced what he says is the first global, fully independent scientific body dedicated to "helping close the AI knowledge gap and assess the real impacts of AI across economies and societies." The UN received more than 2600 applications and final 40 members of the group have been sent to the UN General Assembly for sign off. The list is experts from all over the world and comprises 19 women and 21 men. "The panel will help the world separate facts from fakes, and science from slop," Guterres told reporters at the UN. "It will provide an authoritative reference point at a moment when reliable, unbiased understanding of AI has never been more critical." The experts the SG is proposing for the panel are people from machine learning, data governance, public health, cybersecurity, childhood development and human rights, among other fields.
