I have criticized conservatives who blame Canada or the Carney government for Donald Trump’s erratic, bad faith attacks on our economy & sovereignty. It’s even more absurd to blame a provincial government, as the NDP does below. Canada is not to blame. Neither are our provinces or their governments. We have been good neighbours & great trading partners. When called upon, we have been reliable allies, as in the global war on terrorism in Afghanistan. Are we perfect? Of course not. But for every reasonable trade grievance the United States has with us, we have many more with them (tariffs on softwood lumber, steel & aluminum, etc., ag import quotas, Buy America provisions, etc.) That’s what trade negotiations & agreements are designed to balance. The last time we signed a comprehensive trade agreement with the United States, Donald Trump call it “the best trade deal ever.” Does the US have some legitimate national security concerns with Canada? Yes, but they pale in comparison to the massive northward flow of illegal drugs and firearms (up to 90% of gun crimes committed in Canada involve smuggled US firearms.) Allies & neighbours work through those issues, as we did in the post 9/11 period with major legislative & operational changes to improve continental security. Have our political leaders provoked these constant, irrational attacks, like the latest 50% tariff threats? Of course not. If anything, they have been restrained and diplomatic in the face of constant threats to our sovereignty, and attacks on our economy. (Recall that on January 7, 2025 Trump said he would use “economic force” to annex Canada.) Is it legitimate to criticize how Canadian leaders are dealing with the constant threats from Washington? Of course, we’re a democracy. But it is absurd to blame Canada or Canadian governments for the constant lies, disparagement, attacks, and threats. Opposition parties have a right & responsibility to offer constructive criticism on how governments are managing this crisis, but within a broader context of national unity that transcends brain dead partisanship.

Canada’s boreal forest — the source of much of the wildfire smoke drifting into the U.S. — isn’t like our managed forests in the lower 48. It’s the largest intact forest ecosystem on Earth: roughly 1.3 billion acres (about 78 times larger than Alaska’s Tongass, our biggest national forest, and 7 times larger than all 154 U.S. National Forests combined). It stretches in an almost continuous belt from the Yukon to Newfoundland. Why can’t they just do controlled burns like we do here? Because most of it is remote, roadless wilderness. • Less than 9% of Canada’s population lives in the boreal region. • Less than 1% of the forest itself is developed. • Vast areas have no roads and are only accessible by aircraft or winter roads. You can’t send crews in to do prescribed burns across a billion+ acres of inaccessible terrain the way we can in populated areas near roads and communities in the U.S. Wildfire has been nature’s primary management tool in these ecosystems for thousands of years. Smoke reaching the Northeast isn’t new either. It happened in 1950, 1988, 1995, 2002, 2017, 2021, 2023, 2025, and now 2026. Weather (especially upper-level wind patterns) determines where the smoke goes, not just where the fires are burning. Blaming Canada’s government for “not controlling” these fires is political theater. The scale and inaccessibility make large-scale suppression or prevention across that wilderness fundamentally different — and in many places, practically impossible — from managing forests near U.S. population centers. Nature runs that forest. Politicians don’t. Let’s stop pretending otherwise.
