எமர்ஜென்சிக்கு பிறகு நடந்த தேர்தலில் காங்கிரஸ் கட்சி தோற்கடிக்கப்பட்டு, ஜனதா கட்சி ஆட்சிக்கு வந்திருந்த காலம். அந்த நேரத்தில் டெல்லி விமான நிலையத்தில் வெளிநாட்டில் இருந்து வந்த விமானத்தில் இருந்து இறங்கியிருந்தவர் Rajiv Gandhi — முன்னாள் பிரதமர் Indira Gandhi அவர்களின் மகன். அந்த விமானத்தில் வந்த அனைவரையும் கஸ்டம்ஸ் அதிகாரிகள் வெளியே அனுப்பிவிட்டார்கள். ஆனால் ஒருவரை மட்டும் தடுத்து வைத்தார்கள் — ராஜீவ் காந்தியை. அவரது இரண்டு பெரிய பெட்டிகளும் கைப்பையும் திறக்கப்பட்டு, உள்ளிருந்த துணி, பொருட்கள் எல்லாம் தரையில் வாரி இறைக்கப்பட்டது. ஒரு மணி நேரம்... இரண்டு மணி நேரம்... கஸ்டம்ஸ் அதிகாரிகள் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் அதே கேள்விகளை கேட்டனர். “எதையாவது கடத்தி வந்திருக்கிறீர்களா?” அவருடைய பெட்டிகளில் ஏதோ ஒன்றை தேடி கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். ஆனால் இந்த அத்துமீறல்களுக்கும் நடுவில் ராஜீவ் காந்தியின் முகத்தில் இருந்த புன்னகை மட்டும் மாறவில்லை. இந்த காட்சியை நேரில் பார்த்தவர் எழுத்தாளர் மற்றும் நடிகர் Bharathi Mani. அவர் பின்னர் நினைவுகூரும்போது சொன்னது: “மூன்று மணி நேரம் அவரை சோதனை செய்தார்கள். அவரது பொருட்களை எல்லாம் தரையில் போட்டுவிட்டார்கள். அவரிடம் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் கேள்விகள் கேட்டார்கள். ஆனால் அவர் ஒரு முறை கூட கோபப்படவில்லை. அமைதியாக புன்னகையுடன் பதில் சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.” பாரதி மணி கோபத்தில் ஒரு கஸ்டம்ஸ் அதிகாரியிடம் கேட்டாராம்: “அவர் யார் தெரியுமா? முன்னாள் பிரதமரின் மகன். அவரை ஏன் இப்படி தொந்தரவு செய்கிறீர்கள்?” அதற்கு அந்த அதிகாரி மெதுவாக சொன்ன பதில்: “எங்களுக்கும் இது பிடிக்கவில்லை சார். மேலிடத்திலிருந்து வந்த உத்தரவு… குறைந்தது இரண்டு மூன்று மணி நேரம் அவரை தடுத்து வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும் என்று.” மூன்று மணி நேர சோதனைக்குப் பிறகு, தரையில் இருந்த துணிகளை மீண்டும் பெட்டியில் அடைக்க முடியாமல் ஒரு துணியில் கட்டி எடுத்துக்கொண்டு, முகத்தில் இருந்த அதே புன்னகையுடன் விமான நிலையத்திற்கு வெளியே நடந்துசென்றார் அந்த மனிதர். அந்த அமைதியாக நடந்துசென்ற மனிதரால் தான் இன்று தகவல் தொழில்நுட்ப புரட்சி, தொலை தொடர்பு புரட்சி, கிராம சபை, பஞ்சாயத்து ராஜ், உள்ளாட்சியில் பெண்களுக்கான இட ஒதுக்கீடு, ஆபரேஷன் பிளாக் போர்டு, ஆபரேஷன் பூமாலை, Insat Series Satellites, தமிழ்நாடு காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர் இளைய பெருமாள் தலைமையில் கொடுத்த அறிக்கையின் அடிப்படையில் தலித் மக்களின் மீது நடத்தப்பட்ட கொடுமைகளுக்கு எதிரான வன்கொடுமை தடுப்புச் சட்டம், சூப்பர் கம்ப்யூட்டரை அமெரிக்கா நமக்கு தர மறுத்ததை அடுத்த நினைத்து பார்க்க முடியாத தொகையை கொடுத்து இந்திய விஞ்ஞானிகளை வைத்து கம்யூட்டர், மற்றும் பொறியியல் துறையில் வல்லமை பெற்றது, ஓட்டு போடும் வயது 18 ஆக குறைத்து இளைஞர்களை அரசியலுக்கு இழுத்தது, அஸ்ஸாம், மிசோரம் பஞ்சாப் அமைதி ஒப்பந்தம், Environment Protection Act 1986 கொண்டு வந்து நிலத்தையும் நீரையும் மாசு படுத்துவது சட்டப்படி குற்றமாக அறிவித்தது, prevention of corruption act 1988, கொண்டு வந்து சொத்து குவிப்பு என்ற நூதன முறையில் ஊழல்வாதிகளை பிடிக்க வழி செய்தது என வெறும் 5 வருட ஆட்சியில் மாபெரும் வேலைகள் நடந்தது. ராஜீவ்காந்தியும் ஒரு புரட்சியாளரே! இந்த நாட்டிற்காக உயிர் தியாகம் தான் தேவை என்றால் அதை செய்ய நான் தயாராக இருக்கிறேன் என்று அவர் கூறிய போதும் அதே புன்னகை அவர் முகத்தில் தெரிந்தது!

Last night, the Modi government demolished twenty years of MGNREGA in one day. VB–G RAM G isn’t a “revamp” of MGNREGA. It demolishes the rights-based, demand-driven guarantee and turns it into a rationed scheme which is controlled from Delhi. It is anti-state and anti-village by design. MGNREGA gave the rural worker bargaining power. With real options, exploitation and distress migration fell, wages increased, working conditions improved, all while building and reviving rural infrastructure. That leverage is precisely what this government wants to break. By capping work and building in more ways to deny it, VB–G RAM G weakens the one instrument which the rural poor had. We saw what MGNREGA meant during COVID. When the economy shut down and livelihoods collapsed, it kept crores from falling into hunger and debt. And it helped women the most - year after year, women have contributed more than half the person-days. When you ration a jobs programme, it is women, Dalits, Adivasis, landless workers and the poorest OBC communities who get pushed out first. To top it all, this law was bulldozed through Parliament without proper scrutiny. The opposition demand to send the bill to a Standing Committee was rejected. A law that rewires the rural social contract, affecting crores of workers should never be rammed through without serious committee scrutiny, expert consultation, and public hearings. PM Modi’s targets are clear: weaken labour, weaken the leverage of rural India, especially Dalits, OBCs and Adivasis, centralise power, and then sell slogans as “reform”. MGNREGA is among the most successful poverty alleviation and empowerment programmes in the world. We will not let this government destroy the rural poor’s last line of defence. We will stand with workers, panchayats, and states to defeat this move and build a nationwide front to ensure this law is withdrawn.

It has been a lifeline for millions of rural Indians and proved to be a crucial economic safety net during the COVID pandemic. Yet, this scheme has always unsettled PM Modi. For the past ten years, his government has systematically tried to weaken it. Today, he is determined to erase MGNREGA altogether. MGNREGA was built on three fundamental principles: 1. Right to employment - anyone who demands work must be provided employment 2. Autonomy for villages to decide their own development works 3. Full wage support by the Central Government and 75% of material costs Now, Modi ji wants to transform MGNREGA into a tool of centralised control: 1. Budgets, schemes, and rules will be dictated by the Centre 2. States will be forced to bear 40% of the costs 3. Once funds run out, or during harvest season, workers will be denied employment for months This new bill is a direct insult to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. After destroying the future of India’s youth through massive unemployment, the Modi Government is now targeting the secure livelihood of poor rural families. From Sadak to Sansad, we will oppose this anti-people bill.

While in Germany, LoP Rahul Gandhi toured BMW Welt and the BMW Plant in Munich, engaging with advanced manufacturing practices. Manufacturing is the backbone of economic growth, India needs a renewed focus on it to create sustainable, quality jobs.

In the National Herald case, the judiciary has once again exposed the Union BJP government’s misuse of central agencies to target opposition leaders.
