This map does a good job in explaining the German longing for Italy (we even have a word for that longing: Italiensehnsucht)

9-year-old Kade Lovell was registered for the 5K but was misdirected by a volunteer and ended up on the 10K course instead. He finished the full 10K (6.2 miles) in about 48 minutes and 17 seconds, crossing the line first overall and beating the second-place adult runner (a 40-year-old) by nearly a minute.

The reflection is finally coming back. After weeks of construction, water is returning to the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall as part of President Trump's push to restore Washington, D.C.'s iconic landmarks. The difference is already striking, with the Washington Monument's signature reflection beginning to reappear across the water.

@state_secession @vintagemapstore To add to what others have commented, the Silk Road existed, yes, but wasn't fully safe and navigable until the post-Mongol period, which is when Marco Polo lived.

Why didn't they explore farther? I realize ocean navigation & sailing was not yet developed enough, but you can just walk like Marco Polo did Did not enough nations allowed transit of merchants, besides the Silk Road? & your map doesn't even show them even reaching the end of that road

@Ihartitz NFL teams only run play action 0.2% of the time? Like one in 500 snaps? That's like twice per season. I'm reading this graph wrong, right?

@JoeO1834479 @nickwalt Raiders have a heck of a lot more optimism for the future than the Browns. If Cleveland had a talented young quarterback, a good new head coach, and several skilled players already on the roster, they wouldn't have traded Myles Garrett.

Maxx Crosby when asked what feels different about the #Raiders in the Klint Kubiak era: "I'm not into making predictions, getting too high, too low. I've been there before and I'm always going to be overly optimistic. If you don't believe, you have no chance. For me, coming into every single season, I believe we play this game to win... I think Klint has done an awesome job. (DC Rob Leonard) has done an awesome job. We have new coaches all over the place. We have a lot of new energy and it's different but we're learning on the fly... We got a lot of new guys on the roster. It's a process and you just have to buy into it every day. You can't look too far down the road. You can't look in the past. All that is irrelevant. It's all about where your feet are at... Being present and focused on getting better because that's going to give us the best chance when it comes to Sundays." Crosby added that Kubiak is "an extremely smart, great leader of men" and that he's happy to still be in Las Vegas.

@agingroy Would the 93.6% for low-risk patients be higher if they'd been treated with chemo instead? And what's being done to ensure that the definition of "low-risk" isn't putting some women in danger?

For 40 years, "high-risk breast cancer" meant chemo for everyone who got that label. A trial of 4,429 women just broke that rule. They took the tumor, ran a 50-gene test (Prosigna), and let the biology decide who actually needed chemo. The women the test called low-risk skipped it entirely, hormone pills only. Five years later: 93.6% alive and cancer-free on pills alone. 94.8% on chemo. Basically the same number. 68% of these "high-risk" women could have skipped chemo and never lost a thing. That's hair, nausea, nerve damage, and months of your life. Gone because a gene test read the tumor, not because a protocol read the chart. It was presented at ASCO last week, the biggest cancer meeting of the year. If you have ER-positive breast cancer, or know someone who does, ask your oncologist about Prosigna by name before the next treatment call.

PFF ranked the best non-1st-round draft steals since 2016 The 49ers drafted 4 of the 20 steals: 1. Brock Purdy 6. George Kittle 7. Fred Warner 20. DJ Reed (now with the Lions) Brock Purdy: “Since his debut in 2022, the former Mr. Irrelevant has gone from sleeper to outright star. Over the last four years, Purdy ranks ninth in PFF passing grade, and his 60 turnover-worthy plays are tied for the ninth-fewest.” George Kittle: “Kittle has been an insanely consistent player, notching at least an 84.7-plus overall PFF grade in eight straight seasons. Unsurprisingly, his 94.1 overall mark since 2017 is the best among all tight ends, and he trails only Travis Kelce in WAR during that duration.” Fred Warner: “Despite being a third-round choice in 2018, Warner has become widely regarded as the best linebacker in the league. Over the last six seasons, the former BYUCougar leads the position in overall PFF grade (93.0) and ties for second in WAR among his counterparts. It’s difficult to pinpoint any holes in his game given that Warner boasts a 92.3 grade or better in both coverage and run defense in that span.” DJ Reed: “Although Reed wasn’t taken until the 142nd pick in 2018, he grades as the 10th-best cornerback since 2019 among qualifiers.”

🇫🇮🇺🇦On May 28, the Finnish Ministry of Defence announced its 33rd military aid package for Ukraine — equipment worth approximately €128 million. The package includes both transfers from the stockpiles of Finland's Defence Forces and weapons purchased from Finnish industry. With this latest decision, Finland's total defence equipment deliveries to Ukraine have reached €3.4 billion. Thirty-three packages. €3.4 billion. From a country of 5.6 million people sharing the longest land border with Russia of any EU member state. Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen's words deserve to be repeated in full: "Ukraine continues to need the support of its Western allies in its struggle. Russia is waging its criminal war of aggression for the fifth year in a row. Finland is committed to supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes. This also strengthens Finland's defence industrial base." This is the part Ukraine never forgets. Finland knows what neighbouring Russia means. Finland knows what it costs to defend a free, sovereign country against the same imperial impulse Ukraine is now resisting. And Finland has chosen — package after package, year after year — to stand with Ukraine. Finland fought the Winter War in 1939–1940 against Soviet aggression. Outnumbered, outgunned, and outnumbered again — Finland refused to surrender its independence. The world remembers Finnish resilience for a reason. The world remembers because it deserves to be remembered. That same Finland is today one of Ukraine's most consistent and most committed defenders. From a country that knows exactly what is at stake to a country fighting for exactly the same thing. A small country with 1,340 km of border with Russia is teaching the world what real solidarity looks like. Ukraine will not forget. 🇺🇦 Slava Ukraini. 🇫🇮 Eläköön Suomi. — Source: Finnish Ministry of Defence, May 28, 2026 #Ukraine #Finland #Suomi #Kiitos #UkraineWillWin #UAF #FinlandHelpsUkraine

AI doomerism exists, in part, because solutions to our most important problems still remain unsolved while examples of superficial process automation abound. We’ve lost the script. If AI wants to be celebrated, it should put solutions to some of society’s greatest problems at the front of the line. Case in point…why hasn’t anyone focused on an AI for fixing the growing illiteracy of our children?

@TerryTheBuneary All Eeveelutions are types that were exclusively special before the physical/special split, but there are no special types left. I would rather have a new pokemon or a divergent form of Eevee that evolves into all the physical types.
