@victorrgold The construction of hypothetical scenarios to (at least quasi-rigorously) work through the consequences of ideas is the essence of science fiction as a genre, the core of what makes it distinct from other types of story.

I think science fiction is a good way to explore philosophical questions, because it allows you to construct hypothetical scenarios that make those questions more concrete.

One could build an entire conception of esper (bringing that term back) abilities just by listing every neutral structure, brain wave pattern, and neurotransmitter, and declaring that they can be activated or suppressed individually, but expressed in esoteric meditation terms.

I want to write novel series about psychic powers. Parapsychology became passé just as neurology actually began understanding the brain, there's so much untapped potential. Consciousness is a pressing topic in the world today, and telepathy is a perfect thought experiment.

To me almost every new soulslike falls flat, because it feels like the devs are focusing on the wrong things and that is extremely elaborate, ultra difficulty boss fights. Sure DS1 was sorta difficult, but to me it was more about the exploration. That's where it absolutely shone

People used to be possessed by fox spirits and the like, but that doesn't happen anymore due to the vaccine. Trace amounts of cold iron in childhood shots prevent fairy infection.

@himekoyomin I wrote a story like this but found the aspect made it... difficult to find a publisher for. The protagonist referred to it as a "deathwarp".

Geologic depth is a museum of time. Each meter of bedrock excavated takes you another thousand years into the past. All of human history only fills a fleeting fraction of the Earth's crust. Beneath it lies something inhuman. Deep Time is a game about digging it up.

Postrationalism is rehab for junkies that OD'd on the kind of logic that well-rounded people were able to use responsibly throughout their lives. Anyone that didn't get sucked into an EA cult doesn't need astrology to suppress the shakes.

@gregeganSF In theory, there was no reason the movie couldn't have executed a better character-focused drama, it just stumbled in that regard. In practice, the worldbuilding-heavy format of the Youtube videos worked a bit better.

I saw the movie “Backrooms” [not having seen the web series] and though the ideas and visuals were interesting at first, overall it felt very thin. Maybe the original form was a better fit, with an open-ended accretion of lore rather than expectations of a self-contained plot.

@dreamyweather The further you get into the book the more the narrative manifests the ideas it describes in exposition. Just keep going, it will be easier to see the whole picture in retrospect.

I’m currently reading Permutation City and enjoying it but it’s also making me feel a bit insecure about my intelligence bc theres a lot of technical stuff I gloss over and I’m not sure I’m actually *getting* the ideas completely

Found a cool concept in my reading that I kind of want to write about but the name of it (liminoid) sounds silly now bc of internet slang.

@TristanSevers @prerat How do you feel about La Jetée? Or anthology SF films, like Memories (1995)? I see what you're saying about length (you're generally correct, SF thrives in the short format) but short films can still match that crucial bite size.

@TristanSevers A horror movie can also be good along all the same axes any other movie can be (engaging characters, interesting plot, etc.) but being scary is the basis of the genre, it's kind of important.
