Vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives over the past 50 years — not by accident, but because ordinary people made the decision to protect themselves, their children & one another. That’s 6 lives every minute, every day, for more than five decades.

Three years of conflict in #Sudan have created the world’s largest humanitarian health crisis, with over 34 million people in urgent need.
As disease outbreaks and malnutrition rise, access to health services diminishes, immediate action is critical to prevent further devastation and save lives.
@WHO continues to call for unrestricted and safe access to all areas of Sudan, for the protection of health care, and for sustained humanitarian and long-term funding.
Peace is long overdue for Sudan. Without peace, health cannot be attained.

Today, April 18, WHO delivered critical trauma supplies and essential medicines to Nabatieh in south Lebanon, reinforcing hospitals’ capacity to save lives. This was made possible with support from @eu_echo.
Amid a fragile ceasefire, @WHO remains steadfast, supporting frontline health workers and communities in the south as displaced families begin returning, and helping hospitals continue to function under immense pressure.
Since 2 March, 100 health workers have been killed and 233 injured in Lebanon, an unacceptable toll. Six hospitals in the south and southern Beirut suburbs are now fully closed, with 15 more partially damaged.
Our work does not pause. From sustaining emergency care to delivering essential medicines where they are needed most, WHO continues to support the response on the ground.
The situation in #Lebanon remains extremely volatile. Access to health care must be ensured, and health workers, patients and facilities must be protected at all times.

Message from WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr @HananBalkhy on #WorldHealthDay
World Health Day 2026 calls on all of us to #StandWithScience.
Science is the cornerstone of everything we do in health. It helps us understand diseases, develop vaccines and treatments and deliver care more efficiently and affordably – making services equitable and accessible.
It enables better evidence-based decisions and helps protect communities from the growing health risks linked to conflict and climate change.
This year’s theme – “Together for health. Stand with science” – reminds us that evidence alone is not enough. We need trust, cooperation and sustained investment to turn knowledge into action.
Across our Region, health workers and scientists are working every day, often in difficult conditions, to save lives and strengthen systems, supported by @WHO’s global network of over 800 collaborating centres.
On this World Health Day, let’s stand with science for a healthier, safer future for all.

Conflict does not stay contained and neither do its health consequences.
Even before the current conflict, health systems across the Middle East were under immense strain, from climate shocks, displacement, disease outbreaks and widening funding gaps.
Today, the consequences are even more severe: disrupted access to health care, rising health risks, attacks on health care, damage to critical infrastructure affecting water and environmental safety, and systems pushed closer to collapse.
Governments and donors must act now to uphold international humanitarian law, sustain essential health services and close critical funding gaps.
In my latest editorial in @arabnews, I outline the challenges and the urgent priorities ahead. 👇
