Message from WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Dr @HananBalkhy on #WorldHealthDay World Health Day 2026 calls on all of us to #StandWithScience. Science is the cornerstone of everything we do in health. It helps us understand diseases, develop vaccines and treatments and deliver care more efficiently and affordably – making services equitable and accessible. It enables better evidence-based decisions and helps protect communities from the growing health risks linked to conflict and climate change. This year’s theme – “Together for health. Stand with science” – reminds us that evidence alone is not enough. We need trust, cooperation and sustained investment to turn knowledge into action. Across our Region, health workers and scientists are working every day, often in difficult conditions, to save lives and strengthen systems, supported by @WHO’s global network of over 800 collaborating centres. On this World Health Day, let’s stand with science for a healthier, safer future for all.

Conflict does not stay contained and neither do its health consequences. Even before the current conflict, health systems across the Middle East were under immense strain, from climate shocks, displacement, disease outbreaks and widening funding gaps. Today, the consequences are even more severe: disrupted access to health care, rising health risks, attacks on health care, damage to critical infrastructure affecting water and environmental safety, and systems pushed closer to collapse. Governments and donors must act now to uphold international humanitarian law, sustain essential health services and close critical funding gaps. Deeply concerned by attacks on health care in #Iran, including incidents affecting hospitals, health workers and critical facilities such as the 105-year-old Pasteur Institute of Iran, a cornerstone of scientific research and a @WHO collaborating centre.  Other health facilities have also been impacted, including the Delaram Sina Psychiatric Hospital, while damage to the Tofigh Daru pharmaceutical facility is disrupting the production of essential medicines.  This is not only damage to infrastructure. It is a loss to health systems, scientific capacity and continuity of care. Conflict in the Middle East is affecting the very people and services working to save lives. These attacks not only cost lives but deprive communities of care when they need it most. As a mother I’m deeply inspired by the courage of women protecting children’s health in the most difficult circumstances. This #InternationalWomensDay I am thinking of four remarkable women in Gaza: Dr Ola, Dr Yara, Dr Refqa and Dr Mona, who continued the fight against polio despite conflict, loss and uncertainty, ensuring children receive the protection they deserve.
