For the record, I am NOT against helping homeless people or having them in the business district of my ward. I am against the known over-saturation of services in one area of #LdnOnt. I am for ACTUAL help, not enabling. I support pathways out of homelessness & addiction & sex work. I do NOT support using taxpayer money to provide @ArkAidMission food & day spaces to more than one hundred people (many of whom are dealing with severe addiction & mental health issues). Doing this within a densely populated neighbourhood and on the Main Street of a valued OEV business district is seen by tax paying residents as going against our Strategic Plan. Many homeless people express safety concerns and disapproval that funds are not going to the housing and recovery supports that they desperately need and deserve. I voted in favour of funding the 13 pallet homes in OEV at the Unity Project in Spring 2023. At the end of 2023, I pushed for the funding of all 120 beds last winter even though the staff report said there was not enough money, it was in a bad location (30 beds on the Main Street of OEV BIA) and costs were very high —- BECAUSE IT WAS WINTER and people deserved indoor overnight shelter (not just the winter day spaces that had been approved by Council) I supported the 60 day extension of Ark Aid Street Mission for June/July 2024 to give the Whole of Community System Response an opportunity to create a plan to retain the trained staff and volunteers at the next hub or highly supportive housing. Londoner homeowners, tenants, business owners, community & arts organizations, national historic site, visitors and patrons deserve “safe, vibrant, and healthy neighbourhoods and communities” (Outcome 1 of our Strategic Plan) 1.1 Londoners “deserve to feel safe across the city, in the core, and in their neighbourhoods and communities.” 2023-2027 Strategic Plan I believe that I owe it to Londoners and the residents of Ward 4 and Old East Village to advocate for help for the homeless that actually helps them lead a better life and that doesn’t hurt the rest of the community.
