Cormac McCarthy is a good metric for how well you can read—it’s not the faux literary fluff that gets praised today, but it’s also not readily apparent to the reader. So much is said in what is unsaid, so you have to really read. For example:

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

As I said after the World Series, baseball has clearly re-established itself as the number-two sport in the country, behind football. There's no debate at this point. America wants to watch March baseball more than the culmination of the NBA season.
The WBC final comfortably outdrew Games 1-6 of the 2025 NBA Finals and beat the series average.
Before you pin that on Thunder-Pacers, the WBC Final also outdrew Game 4 of the 2024 NBA Finals and was 500,000 viewers shy of beating the series average. 2024 featured two top-10 TV media markets, legitimate NBA star power in Luka, and NBA royalty in the Celtics.
There should be panic at NBA headquarters over this, and MLB should be terrified of a work stoppage that would kill this momentum.

If your children have a choice, choose for them a foreign language that grants them access to great western thinkers, choose with that in mind and not based on how many speakers of that language live on earth.
It’s quality of exchange and thought that matters not quantity.
Have them learn German or French, Ancient Greek or Latin. Forget about Spanish or Arabic. It isn’t going to make them stand out on the market, it’s saturated anyway.
