This is a colossal failure on the part of the Biden admin (and antitrust hawks generally). The government stopped Spirit from merging with JetBlue over concerns about ticket prices. So instead the low-price company will just shut down instead. A total faceplant.

@I2mpact @PatGarofalo I struggle with this. Our whole economy is based on low-wage workers being underpaid to bolster profits. At which point, we hope they don’t use the safety net. The truth is, you pay one way or another. That’s not to say we can’t be efficient about it.

@PatGarofalo Perhaps, but if they work 5 days a week for 8 hour shifts at $16 hour is $34,049. Quick AI query says in Minneapolis, between $10 to $18 an hour average tip, so $16 an hour plus high of $18, still at $71K for highest earner. Maybe they deserve the wage?

Jason - this is an excellent data point. Just think of the costs when you factor in the paid leave and sick time mandates, sky high property taxes and that employers pay payroll taxes on employee tips.
Keep in mind this is not an accident. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are opposed to tipped employee models. They don't view the destruction of tipped jobs as a problem. They view it as a feature. This is deliberate, not an accident.

@jdavnie Caucuses aren’t representative of the DFL; I don’t know who will be the stronger candidate against the GOP, I just know an unrepresentative process is likely to give us results unrepresentative of the DFL, which I think you understood.
