Devo has allowed a limited but good experiment on student funding. From a nation-building perspective, I think Scotland's approach has proved better than the Welsh one and we should move towards it.

But it's a massive brain drain for everywhere else. This is a big part of why Scotland (though never able to admit it publicly) gives "huge middle class subsidies" to its best students to stay in Scottish universities and not leave for South East England.

Looking to buy some lunch on a work trip in rural NE Wales, I Googled and was offered a selection of quite distant supermarkets. Followed my nose to a lovely independant shop in a splendidly scenic village. Can't we have an anti-corporate search system?

Applied across Wales.
No job.
Now she’s heading to Australia — recruited, welcomed, offered a clear career pathway.
She leaves with £80,000 in debt.
Wales walks away from the investment in her training.
So here’s the question:
How much did it cost the Welsh taxpayer to train her — only to lose her?
Hundreds of thousands in public funding.
Another doctor not treating Welsh patients.
Another vacancy unfilled.
Meanwhile:
Waiting lists stretch into years.
NHS Wales reports thousands of vacancies.
Patients wait longer for operations.
Tomorrow we tell her story — and ask the question ministers cannot duck:
What is the true cost of training doctors Wales doesn’t employ?
And how long will patients pay the price?
