I know this is a brain dead hockey fan take but I still can’t believe, with a goal that size, that there aren’t like 40 goals a game in soccer.

Judith hielt mich da tatsächlich vom Umschalten ab...😊

@CoachPapaJohn us-americans brothers, you need to understand that if nfl jj watt had started soccer from age 5, he would develop a different body, less muscular, a body like robert lewandowski! jj watt would not be like superhero capitan america type body! and you will say he is less athletic

My favorite part of the World Cup is Europeans not thinking world class athletes can pick up soccer if they start at five years old. It’s all skill acquisition man, Europeans are not born better with their feet
Toke Theilade@TokeTheilade

I wish Americans would watch this before talking their shit about how "they would dominate soccer if their best athletes didn't play other sports." No American national team has ever come close to this level of fluidity.

I made my debut on @nbaonespn today! I’ve loved the NBA since I was a kid so to appear on the show was amazing and a dream come true! Which NBA player would you associate with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland? Do you agree with my picks?

I’m not sure if the Belgian soccer team was that good or if the US soccer team was that bad. And at this point I’m too afraid to ask.

@akafaceUS only 540 players in the elite german bundesliga! german population is ~83million! to think that every boy who plays soccer from age 5 becomes a professional player is stupid! 0,0031 % german boys would become maybe a pro player! the same for usa! even you have more population

Here’s how soccer actually works in the US.. kids 4 years old or so play it until they’re old enough to play baseball or football and nobody thinks about it again. The boys who play soccer in highschool aren’t looked at in the same way as the kids who play football/baseball/basketball.

@alexjmingolla but thats the point! soccer from age 5 they would not have the body type like an nfl player! they would look like the curent usa team player and you would say they are less athletic than nfl players! because they are not big and muscular!

Europeans still misunderstand this argument. There are ~192 wide receivers in the NFL. These guys are 6+ feet tall, fast, strong, quick feet, powerful jump, great reflexes, elite positioning, spatial IQ etc. We’re not saying if you gave them a soccer ball today they’d outscore Haaland. But if you gave those 192 NFL receivers a ball at their feet instead of in their hands at 5 years old, and you trained them to be strikers with the same intensity that took them to the NFL? I promise you’d have at least one elite number 9 among the bunch.
T@tdgator9

Haaland is what Americans mean when we say our bigger, stronger, faster athletes play other sports instead of soccer but if they focused on it they’d be elite.

@ShlamDoubleU @Gee__Gazza yes and no! the problem is that the image that you have from an nfl-nba player is because of the specific traning for this! but from age 5 playing soccer your nfl-nba guy would have a different body, he would be a skinnyer guy with less muscles! and you woud not like it!

How do I explain to Euros that they're shadowboxing a strawman? No one said LeBron could lace up tomorrow and dominate soccer. People aresaying give America's genetic freaks the ball at age 5 instead of a basketball and they'd be elite. Debate the premise all you want, cause truth is we have no idea, but at least argue against what people actually said not your fanfic version 🤦‍♂️

How do I explain to Americans that I could go to a random Sunday league game in England, pick out 6 random players and put them against Americas "best" athletes from Basketball/NFL/Athletics in a 6 a side football game and they'd win? Comfortably.

Confusing athleticism with sport-specific skill. Of course soccer requires technical ability. So does basketball. So does football. So does baseball. The best players in every sport combine elite athleticism with elite skill. The discussion is about where America's elite athletes enter the pipeline in the first place— not whether skill matters.
Ryan Lee@honorablesaint

What you don't realize is that the purported athleticism everyone thinks about, isn't advantageous in soccer. Running a 4.3 40 means nothing. A 40in vertical means nothing. Oh your fast and quick? Congrats. You're not running in a straight line. Can you sprint with a ball and cut on a dime while maintaining control of the ball? How's your first touch? How's your technique? Can you play a full 90 min. tactically and especially late in the game with an empty tank? How's your vision? Shooting technique? Can you create space for your own shot? The ball moves faster than any player. There are a ton of freak athletes that have played soccer. And guess what? Many of them became nothing because they didn't have the required skills to push to the next level. The top guys you're seeing playing at the highest level are their because they have all these traits. Soccer isn't the NFL where you locate a random 6'4 300lb nigerian on steroids that's a freak athlete and draft him into the NFL with a pro contract. You realize that someone like Messi has just as good of athletcism as someone like Lebron, right? He's just not 6'8 and his height is actually beneficial to the game. There's a reason why most tall people go play basketball and not soccer. Jokic grew up playing and loving soccer. He wouldn't last a minute on the field, but in the NBA he's the best player and the best player in the world.

i get what you’re saying (as you clarified for the comments) but they are elite athletes given the level of conditioning to be able to be at peak physical performance for a World Cup tournament the true issue here is that americans have a very stupid fucking definition of “athleticism”
Oscar Patel, Apparently@HendrickD82

"oh our best athletes don't play the sport, that's why we suck" No, you silly cunts, that's not it. The two best international teams ever, in terms of success, are Spain 08-12 and the current Argentina team. Neither of which have elite athletes or even close to it.

Probably the most misunderstood part about soccer is the type of athlete it requires. Soccer players run close to 10 miles and are in motion for 90 minutes. NFL players run about 1.5 miles and are in motion for like 6ish minutes. You need marathoners, not quick twitch.
