For more than a decade, people have been waiting for the Purple Line.
Today, we installed the FINAL piece of rail, and now the more than 16 miles of track connecting New Carrollton to Bethesda are complete.
This milestone means we can begin the next stage of vehicle and systems integration tests. I’m thankful for everyone who made this milestone possible.

Incredible @ggwash article about Ward 3's history of racial exclusion, how zoning perpetuates it, and what we can do to fix it (build more homes).
The history here is particularly ugly. Not just keeping people off color out but forcibly evicting an entire black neighborhood.

On its third attempt tonight, Marblehead Town Meeting approved an “MBTA Communities–compliant” district largely centered on the 125-year-old Tedesco Country Club, meeting 3A requirements on paper while all but assuring no new housing would be built. This comment says it all.

NEWS: The D.C. Council has given final approval to @BrianneKNadeau's bill that would allow for smaller buildings to be built in D.C. with a single stairwell, instead of two as currently required. Proponents say it would allow building on small lots, and bigger units.

Interesting: @BrianneKNadeau has a new bill that would allow for the construction of buildings up to six stories tall with a single stairwell and entrance/exit in D.C. Like in many other places in the U.S., the current construction code requires two stairwells for fire safety.

@beyonddc You could amend the 2nd point to say bad planners empower NIMBYs by hiding behind process to thwart any progress.
But in defense of planners in DC in Ward 3 at least that happens because of the political class & not planners.

Someone recently asked me what makes a good city planner vs a bad one. Here's my answer:
Good planners value working with people to solve problems & achieve shared goals.
Bad planners hide behind process to make themselves petty lords of a tiny fiefdom to gatekeep prosperity.

It has taken years but we may yet land here with the Chevy Chase Library where DC makes one concession after another to opponents who have no interest in compromise.

@misterAmos Our current zoning prohibits anything but single family detached homes in most of the district. You'll sometimes hear this called "exclusionary zoning", because it's often used as a tool by wealthy neighborhoods to keep out "those people"

Rowhouses are DC’s iconic residential style, but they’re restricted or banned in ~67% of the city's residential zones. It's illegal to build the types of housing that helped define the District. We've got to change that.
