Numbered Treaties don’t mean natives have no say on Alberta, the opposite, actually. Treaty 6, 7, and 8 were signed with the Crown, not with Alberta. The province didn’t exist until 1905, so you can’t secede out of an obligation you weren’t even a party to. The written text says “cede, release, surrender.” But the oral promises made to chiefs were “as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the rivers flow” — shared use, not a one-time handover. Courts increasingly weigh that oral record alongside the paper. Treaty and Aboriginal rights are constitutionally protected under Section 35. A province can’t override that unilaterally. Treaty 8 Grand Chief Trevor Mercredi called out Smith directly for treating Section 35 as a “legal uncertainty.” It isn’t — the Supreme Court has upheld it repeatedly. This isn’t theoretical. A Court of King’s Bench ruling already found Alberta’s chief electoral officer failed its duty to consult First Nations and ignored a prior decision holding that separation would violate treaty rights. That’s what got the Stay Free Alberta petition quashed. Seven chiefs put it plainly in January: “Under international and Canadian law, neither Alberta nor Albertans have the right to secede, unilaterally or otherwise. The Treaties were agreed to by First Nations and Crown before Alberta was created.” Athabasca Chipewyan Chief Allan Adam: First Nations signed treaties to share the land, not for separation, or “for you to go wherever you want.” In July, the AFN passed a national emergency resolution: a province cannot unilaterally alter or extinguish Treaty rights or change the constitutional relationship between First Nations and the Crown. Mercredi has said he won’t rule out civil disobedience if Alberta ignores the court rulings and proceeds with the referendum question — blocking highways, halting industry. That’s the real cost separatists never mention. So no, the treaties don’t strip natives of a say. They’re one of the biggest legal walls standing in the way of secession.

Dear former Eskimo / Elk fans. If you are one of those people where the team name change was the final straw and you stopped coming to games…It’s time to forgive and comeback. In my opinion: you have the best Defense in the league (how about the addition of Malik Carney), you have the best RB in the league, your QB is an MOP candidate and your HC/OC/DC are humming. Next weekend you play the defending Grey cup champs (again) but this time at home. It’s time to comeback and restore the fanbase. I won’t be there (doing Friday game in Ottawa) but I hope to see commonwealth packed and on fire!!!!
