Freedom of religion matters, but public safety matters too. No child should be carrying a sharp weapon in schools or public spaces, regardless of the reason. The Kirpan can still be respected as an article of faith through a symbolic version that is small, blunt, and non-sharp, preserving religious identity without risking harm to others. Reform UK’s local election campaign slogan was: “Vote Reform, get Starmer out.” But now, if Reform were to win Makerfield, the most likely outcome is that Starmer stays. That should tell you something about Reform HQ’s strategy: 1) it’s inconsistent 2) they think you are daft enough not to notice the inconsistency 3) it is driven less by concern for the people of Makerfield or the country, and more by what advantages Reform itself. Personally, I’d love to see Labour out of power and neither Burnham nor Starmer anywhere near Downing Street. But the reality is that Labour has an unassailable majority in Westminster and that both Labour and Reform are blatantly using this by-election, a by-election the people of Makerfield neither wanted nor asked for, to pursue their own national agendas. The people of the constituency and their interests should be central to this election, not Farage, Starmer or Burnham. Vote to Restore Makerfield for the people of Makerfield.
