This video explores how the design team working on Ookwemin Minising is taking a people-first approach to street design, imagining how a little quirkiness can introduce moments of discovery and joy into the daily commute. Ultimately, this makes for a better neighbourhood. About the project: We’re working on the fundamentals needed to develop new housing on this new island created through flood protection, called Ookwemin Minising. Design for the public spaces, streets, stormwater and sanitary pipes, and utility ducts that support the building of new homes started in summer 2025. Our international design team is integrating design for streets and public spaces with a review of the density and built form on the island. About the design team: Led by a partnership of global professional services company GHD and global design studio SLA, the team includes Allies and Morrison (Architecture and Urban Design firm), Trophic Design (an Indigenous-owned landscape architecture firm), Transsolar (an international climate engineering firm), accessible design consultants Level Playing Field, with community outreach and public engagement led by Monumental Projects. ➡️Learn more about the project: bit.ly/40jmsc6 ➡️A detailed transcript of this video is available here: bit.ly/4siCEXv

Keating Channel Pedestrian Bridge is taking shape! With its signature “S” shaped suspended arch connected by an array of fanning cables that evokes the sun’s path during solstices and equinoxes, the bridge will provide a vital active transportation connection and serve as a striking gateway between downtown and Ookwemin Minising. On track for completion in mid-2028, Keating Channel Pedestrian Bridge is moving from design vision to implementation. Read the latest update on our blog now: bit.ly/4b8QXYm

Toronto’s waterfront is evolving — and you can be part of it. Public voting is now open to help name the City’s two new electric ferries. These vessels will serve residents and visitors for decades to come as part of Toronto’s modernized and electrified ferry fleet. The City of Toronto formed a dedicated Ferry Naming Committee — made up of community members, waterfront and Island stakeholders, and City staff — who carefully reviewed submissions to create a thoughtful shortlist. Now it’s your turn to have a say. Cast your vote now: bit.ly/47um66h Voting closes April 6 at 11:59 p.m.

From dense urban landscape to a "healing forest," Quayside is designed to be a place of transition. Ecology is one of the three pillars shaping the design of Quayside’s public realm – and a key part of the essential infrastructure and public spaces Waterfront Toronto is delivering to set the foundation for future homes, commercial spaces, and community life. You can see this for yourself in our new Quayside Public Realm Immersive Experience. Look for the green markers in chapters like Small Street or Water’s Edge Promenade to explore: bit.ly/4aJQSJl To dive even deeper, read our past blog about how Quayside Public Realm is leading with ecology: bit.ly/3ryvSTg

Hello - Work is continuing to advance on the planning, design and phased delivery of Waterfront East Transit. In summer 2025, council approved funding to begin construction of enabling works as part of the Quayside project — this work is now underway. A report to Council is also expected this spring on the completion of the detailed design for the network and the outcome of the Phasing and Delivery Plan, which will inform implementation.

@donnelly_b @WaterfrontTO The Waterfront East development is suppose to add 4,700 new residential units to Toronto. The streetcar needs to be extended east to serve this community before they move in or else the community will be car dependent!

Toronto should absolutely build an international cultural destination here on the waterfront. Hold an international design competition and create something truly remarkable!

Toronto Poles and Dangling Wires
@WaterfrontTO I hope the hydro poles and wires along the entire street will soon be removed. Also hope the streetcar will be put in before the final condo is completed. It would be a shame for that work to start once everyone has moved in.

Thank you for your comment. As the project moved from the competition concept to a final design, the project team worked closely with advisory bodies and experienced industry partners to refine the bridge in a way that perseveres the original vision while supporting an efficient delivery. These changes shortened the total bridge length and reduced the amount of steel required by 25%, and vastly simplified transportation and installation by allowing the bridge to be delivered in one piece by barge, just like the other new bridges in the Port Lands and aligned with sustainability goals. The bridge remains a striking gateway, defined by its signature form, Indigenous design inspiration, and role connecting downtown to Toronto’s new island.

@WaterfrontTO Where’s the integrated seating and color? The wide path and place-keeping elements from the design competition. What’s the sense in hiring renowned architects and designers if you’re going to deliver the lowest common denominator, striped of everything that makes it interesting

With temperatures fluctuating above and below freezing, melting snow and rain can cause water levels to rise quickly. It’s important to stay mindful around rivers, lakes and ponds. Remember to: 🌊 Keep a safe distance from rivers, lakes and ponds. Ice thickness is hard to judge, and conditions can change quickly. 🚫 Avoid walking, skating or driving on ice‑covered waterbodies unless they are officially designated as safe.
