An immobilised luxury matt black Bentley sports car stands not-incongruously in the semi-dark, leafy & damp Scarborough suburb of Scalby village this morning.
Passing this house, being built in Scarborough's leafy Stepney Rd., easy to think it's been on fire. In fact it has!
The walls are in charred Siberian Larch & the metal roof is in an Anthracite colour to match. By architects Samuel Kendall Assoc. to meet 2050 Zero carbon targets.
Dramaric scenes at Church Hill in Scalby as a large tree in the churchyard has come crashing down into the road. Blocked to traffic, but tree surgeons are cutting it up in a major highways operation.
@urbanponds101 I often find this perplexing. It's like when I pick up other peoples litter it gets noticed more than people drop it. Make it make sense 😂
When I had a new drive, I left a corner untouched. It’s the only ‘wild’ bit on my street, most front gardens have been completely paved over. I like to think of it as little sanctuary for wildlife, despite endlessly being asked if I need help to tidy it up/chop it down! #gardenshour
Wondering where the sunshine has gone?
Spare a thought for northeast Scotland; Aberdeen Dyce hasn't recorded any sunshine since 21 January! This is provisionally the longest sunless period here since records began in 1957 ☁️
We’ll be releasing our full Jan 2026 statistics on Mon 2 Feb. But early provisional Met Office UK statistics show Jan has seen:
👉Above average rainfall – wettest in Northern Ireland, with southern England also very wet compared to average
👉Below average temperatures
👉Just below average sunshine
There's much regional variation - we’ll explain all on Mon.
UPDATE:
The move has unfortunately not gone as planned. The house is an absolute state, dog urine soaked into every single floorboard in the house and a huge amount of rubbish left behind.
My driveway is full of rubbish that i’ve removed from the house, not 100% sure how I’m getting rid of it yet but the neighbours are really nice people and are helping out a lot.
Cleaning. Scrubbing. Repeat, seems to be slowly improving but it’s a lot of work.
I knew this was a bit of a “doer upper” but I had no idea it was quite *this* bad.
Virtually no signal here but internet should be connected today.
Weather updates etc likely to be sparse for a little while.
BUT! It’s temporary. I will figure it out, I’ll get the house into much better condition. I have beautiful views just 3 minutes from the house.
North Devon is my new home! 🏡
PERIOD OF INTEREST | 5th-15 February
Following on from a coherent MJO transition through phases 6-7 it’s likely we will see further progression into phase 8.
Equally, we have a spike in +ve AAM tendency thanks to strong +MT, in particular an emerging +EAMT event which will generate a Pacific jet extension which will likely lead to a relaxation of cold across the USA.
The end result is a weakening of suppression of the Atlantic jet allowing tropical forcing to begin to produce high latitude blocking, particularly towards Greenland with NWP modelling beginning to show a signal for this in the above mentioned period. Alas, we are now onto the next chase period for potential cold.
There is also the possibility of a major SSW or significant weakening of the stratospheric vortex which may enhance cold weather potential later in February and early March too.
SUMMARY
There is increasing potential for blocked patterns in the 5th-15th February period with potential for colder than average temperatures across NW Europe and the UK.
It’s worth adding this is just potential at the moment based on longer range guidance and drivers favouring blocked outcomes, therefore the likelihood of colder weather is higher than normal and the likelihood of milder Atlantic weather during this period is lower than normal.
There is a LOT of ensemble spread now.
The closer the lines are the more confidence we can have in the forecast. The spread is largely down to an increasing number of ensembles finding cold or very cold solutions later in the month.
Momentum continues to grow.
@SnowbieWx Thought I'd come back to this after looking earlier. IF an Easterly occurs at some point soon the sea surface temperatures are still heading down with more 6°C showing. As low as 4°C in the Thames estuary and North Norfolk coast. It wouldn't take much to get it even lower..
Nice cooling of sea surface temperatures around the UK & Ireland in the past two weeks, especially in the North Sea and shallow waters as to be expected which are more vulnerable to sudden weather changes.
I've just checked wholesale fuel prices and for unleaded it's nearly the cheapest in 5years at 89p. It's almost to a point of that you wake up on a morning and feel shafted before getting out of bed with prices of most things.
@Met4CastUK@HarberHarv7128 It still surprises me that Dartmoor is higher than the North York Moors at 2,039feet. With the North York Moors being 1,490.
As of today, I will officially be unemployed.
I’m relocating from Kent to Devon 👀 on the 26th, really excited to start again in a genuinely beautiful part of the country.
Excited to share lots of pictures of beaches and hills! It’ll be great to be surrounded by nature 😊
