I trained a black doctor as a mediator who told me that he had to attend to an elderly white patient soon after the liberation from Apartheid. The patient was being observed in hospital for a possible heart attack and was fast asleep in his bed. When the patient opened his eyes and saw him, he got such a shock he immediately went into cardiac arrest. The doctor saved the patient's life. A few weeks later the patient came to see the doctor to thank him for saving his life and to apologise for getting such a fright seeing him. I wonder if racism is not a curable mental illness.
