Tutto il resto che vi racconteranno — aumento del PIL, crescita dei redditi reali e così via — conta relativamente poco. Se con l’aumento dei redditi non diminuisce la quota spesa per il cibo, significa che non c’è stato un reale miglioramento del benessere. Si vive meglio rispetto agli anni ’90? Sì, negli anni ’90 i russi spendevano per il cibo circa il 45–50% dei propri redditi. Ma è davvero un miglioramento significativo dopo oltre 25 anni di dittatura putiniana, considerando anche che i prezzi del petrolio sono schizzati verso l’alto proprio all’inizio del suo potere, garantendogli entrate enormi? Secondo me no, non è un miglioramento sostanziale. E soprattutto: i russi sono rimasti poveri.
