He knew she was alive when he dumped her. The judge later said he knew she would drown.
Khavari had already been convicted in Greece for attempting to kiII another young woman by pushing her off a cliff - sentenced to 10 years, but released early due to “overcrowded prisons.” He then entered Germany as a claimed “unaccompanied minor” with no papers.
This happened in 2016, during the height of Germany's open border policies. Maria’s own family had volunteered with refugees. Her father was a senior EU official.

Absolutely horrific.
Two Slovakian men came across a 12 year old girl in a supermarket car park in Dover.
They lured her into the car with a cigarette on August 11, 2024. They then plied her with drugs including crystal methamphetamine and amphetamine before she was raped and subjected to sexual acts by them and a third man, Ernest Gunar, 27, over a two-day period.
They moved her from place to place subjecting her to an horrendous ordeal in each place. She was told she would be killed if she told anyone. She eventually escaped by waking before them one morning.
They claimed in court that she was 19 or 20. The judge said that there was no chance she looked that age.
They were found guilty in 2025 and two were sentenced to 19 years in prison and one to 17 years in prison.

Just to add some nuance to the propaganda here.
If you look at the median rather than the mean, which is what actually reflects how most people live, the picture changes quite a bit. Once you also account for unavoidable out of pocket costs like healthcare and education, life in the US looks much more average, and often falls behind Northern European countries for the typical person.
The US model clearly creates immense wealth at the very top, but for the vast majority of people, median living standards are what really matter. And by that measure, the story is far less impressive than it is often made out to be.

Sir Tim Smit, Eden Project co-founder, has proposed a £100bn “Forest City” eco-project in East Anglia.
The plan would turn 45,000 acres of Suffolk-Cambridgeshire farmland into 400,000 new homes, plus England’s biggest nature reserve, 12,000 acres of forests/wetlands and a huge new reservoir.
It includes rewilding with beavers, storks, lynxes and wild boar alongside offices and shops.
Smit calls it a “creative spark” and “roadmap for a beautiful future” to tackle housing and inertia.
The radical proposal is now with Labour’s Housing Secretary for review.
