#Political tensions between the #Somali federal #government and #Puntland have deepened after Puntland’s Minister of Information, Eydiid Dirir, questioned Prime #Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s identity and origins, suggesting he was displaced from #Mogadishu as a child. The remarks followed the #Prime Minister’s accusation at a #Mogadishu conference that the federal government was collectively punishing the people of #Puntland.

Outrage After South Somalia Prime Minister Claims Puntland and Jubaland Are “Not Somali” The Prime Minister of South Somalia has sparked fury after declaring that #Puntland and #Jubaland are not Somali, a statement critics have branded ignorant, divisive and politically reckless. The remarks have drawn particular backlash given the Prime Minister’s own background. He is predominantly from the Ethiopian Somali region, which is internationally recognised as part of Ethiopia, yet he is widely accepted as Somali. By his own logic, critics argue, millions of Somalis across the region would suddenly be excluded. Somalis live in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya’s NFD region, yet their identity has never been questioned. Observers say the Prime Minister’s comments expose a dangerous attempt to redefine Somali identity for political convenience rather than historical or cultural reality. Critics point out the contradiction clearly. The Republic of Somaliland is Somali by people, culture and history, yet it is not part of Somalia by choice. Puntland and Jubaland are Somali regions within Somalia. Identity does not bend to political desperation. “Someone should educate him,” one analyst said. “But at this stage, it would be a waste of time.” With less than 4 months remaining in office, many see the Prime Minister’s comments as the outbursts of a failing administration grasping for relevance as its authority continues to erode.

The Somali Prime Minister has declared that he does not recognize President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Madobe) as the President of Jubaland @JSStatehouse —at a time when the federal government’s own mandate is set to expire in less than four months. A politically tense and ironic moment.
