Opposed by conservative horse-artillery advocates, the Holt 2½-ton Artillery Tractor Model 1918 was an experimental light tracked vehicle built by Holt Manufacturing (Caterpillar’s predecessor) to mechanize US Army field artillery and replace horses. the Ordnance Department turned one into a self-propelled gun by extending the chassis side plates to mount the 3-inch M1916 field gun on trunnions and adding rear outriggers for firing stability on its short, tall frame. The concept never entered production—the M1916 gun was itself discarded in favor of the French 75 mm M1897, and post-Armistice budget cuts killed the project.
