I'm not sure about the details but I'm convinced that how to publish and create impact is due to change very significantly in the near future. The value of writing and reading 8 page PDFs is rapidly dropping. What is the right way to publish the nugget of a research contribution?
Jon Barron@jon_barron

If I was a grad student today, I would: 1) Not write papers, 2) push my (agent-written) code to a public repo ~weekly, 3) maintain (via agents) a writeup.tex (manually verified) and a skill.md in the repo, and 4) work towards establishing skill usage as the new "citation" format.

The lighting representation is in image space so you can use it for things like lighting stabilisation or temporal upsampling in timelapse videos and lighting interpolation, but not currently for transferring lighting from one viewpoint to another - this is future work!

I am delighted (that pun will make sense in a second) that @AlistairFoggin's first paper, CroCoDiLight, has been accepted to ICLR. The idea came from a group discussion on the CroCo paper from @naverlabseurope and realising it might implicitly already understand relighting.
Alistair Foggin@AlistairFoggin

Very excited to announce my first paper, CroCoDiLight! Co-authored with @WillSmithVision and accepted at #ICLR2026. Image relighting, shadow removal, and albedo estimation, all in our single base model with swappable task components. See you in Rio @iclr_conf! [1/7]

@jon_barron Be sure to mention that it's written in Fortran under the hood

@ali_shakiba_cs Easy! We already read the model weights checkpoint from a text file so no reason the dataset couldn’t also be loaded.

When the document is compiled, the LaTeX compiler will generate or load training data, train the network, run experiments, and create figures. A challenge for the authors: Can you include data in the LaTeX source files too?

I had a fascinating short chat with Professor Stuart Prescott (@SWPrescott) about a pre-print: "NEURALATEX," a deep learning library written entirely in LaTeX! Yes, the LaTeX used for writing papers! 🤓🤨

@CSProfKGD Setting aside the pointlessness, is the LaTeX VM fast enough for this to be at all efficient?

@dasayan05 @CSProfKGD We may have caused unintentional confusion by releasing this work on 1st of April. This is pure coincidence. For the avoidance of doubt, NeuRaLaTeX is a real, fully working neural network library in LaTeX.

This has been a massively entertaining and challenging side project with @JADGardner and @WillRowan3 over the past year and (subject to rigorous peer review) will be appearing at @sigbovik 2025.
