This is dumb. Young children think Batman is real. They think fairies and mermaids and dragons are real. I let my children believe in all of that stuff too. If my daughter tells me that she saw a fairy in the garden, I don’t say, “No you didn’t! Fairies are fake!” No, I play along. I say, “You did? Awesome! Where was it?” That’s the same kind of thing we do with Santa. It’s retarded to call that “lying.” It’s more like playing a game. Children live in a fantasy world where magic is real. Going out of your way to kill this kind of magical thinking in a 5 year old is just ridiculous. Let them live in that world. They’re children. Why take it from them? Kids grow out of it eventually on their own. When that happens, you tell them Santa was just a game. By then they’ll already have mostly figured it out. They won’t be traumatized. Now they get to play the game on the other side with their younger siblings. Kids love that, too. I don’t understand adults who deprive their kids (and themselves) of this kind of innocent fun. It’s stupid.
