I would appreciate professional opinions on whether this is Desertas or Zino's Petrel I photographed from the ferry from Madeira-Porto Santo on Monday please. I would put it at 2 on the wing scale? @windbirds@SeaSkywatch@adaptive@Scillypelagics@KirkZufelt
Latest update on the Madeira Wildfires, another night and the fire gets closer. It’s now northwest of nesting ground. We believe that Zino’s Petrels are affected by smoke and fire. Although the fire has not reached the know nests yet it is moving north and could rotate east.
Time-lapse of Pico do Areeiro, Madeira. Last night the know breeding site of Zino’s Petrel was no affected by wildfires that started August 14, 2024 in Serra dAgua.

The highlight from yesterday @windbirds palagic has to be the Zino’s they such smart birds. The lowlights were listening to a guy retching and vomiting over the side on and off, poor lad. And getting drenched by the 6m high waves we’re speeding into on our inflatable rib!
Last night a mountain walk to Zino’s Petrels breeding ledges with @adaptive & Catarina of @windbirds 1st calls in darkness at 22:50 & finally achieving views of sorts at 23:50. Very windy & cold but spectacular scenery & quite an adventure for MrsK & I. With @RobBlack69#Madeira
Seawatching was a bit better than at Saul Warth this morning. 6 Deserta’s Petrels, 20+ Bulwer’s Petrels, both lifers, 100+ Cory’s Shearwaters, 1 Manx Shearwater & 3+ Short-finned Pilot Whales. Thanks @adaptive & Catarina @windbirds#Madeira
Back from guiding on the @naturetrektours Madeira - A Seabird Extravaganza tour. Some fantastic seabirds seen with the @windbirds gang. Can’t get enough of Bulwer’s Petrels! #seabirds#Madeira
We hope you like our video: Zino’s Petrel by night shows exciting behaviour of the seabird observed using thermal imaging above the lofty peaks of #Madeira. #Seabird@windbirds@TheSeabirdGroup
I had a great day on a full day birdwatching trip with @windbirds today! We had Madeira Firecrest, Madeira Chaffinch and Trocaz Pigeon. We also had, Waxbills, Berthelot's pipit, Spectacled Warbler, and I found 2 Hoopoes! The only pair on Madeira! @elyod95
A superb first pelagic with @windbirds yesterday. Photo credits to Duncan Poyser. Zino’s Petrel, sev. Fea’s Petrel, 4 Maderian Petrels and a smashing White-faced Storm Petrel, plus ever present Bulwers & Cory’s.
The star of the 3-day @windbirds set of pelagics. An adult Barolo Shearwater, photo by Kirk Zufelt, was busy in typical foraging behaviour and didn't notice us or simply wasn't bothered by us. Beautiful views.
Some incredible close views of Cory’s Shearwater on the @windbirds first of three pelagics yesterday off Madeira.
The seven hour pelagic on a rib takes a certain level of fitness too!
On Madeira for few days with @lukenashnature. First pelagic with @windbirds last night, this Zino's Petrel finally came in to chum briefly just after 8pm. Another personal highlight for me was the huge raft of Cory's Shearwaters we sailed into as it was getting dark. More today!
One of our pelagic highlights in Madeira- ATLANTIC SPOTTED DOLPHINS visiting our boat to see what we were about!! An amazing experience seeing these beautiful creatures in the evening sunlight! With @windbirds
