@kobyjconrad I am constantly amazed they exist. I even saw one of their very first demos (~seed round). Seemed immediately obvious Gemini or Zoom would eat their lunch. But it's great to be proven wrong and now then.

I think it's remarkable that Baroness Blake, a retired mid-ranking regional bureaucrat appointed to the House of Lords for life, had the arrogance to try and shut down someone who was simply saying goodbye to a place that his family has served for three generations.

🌟 Big personal news: I’m joining @GoogleDeepMind full-time in London starting this week. I’ll be working on the implications of AGI for human life, science, and society; on what it means to live, connect, and discover in a world where cognitive agency is no longer uniquely ours. The way we answer these questions will define what it means to be human. I can’t think of a better place to do it.

@aeronlaffere I've been thinking about this. But I think the simple answer is considering he can't even get the name right, he just doesn't know what he's talking about. That's my theory of consciousness for him. 😅 Knows how to spell phenotype, but can't spell Claude? 🤔 Skill issue.

I’m struck by the remarkable confidence with which people are criticising this. “It’s obviously not conscious!” I’m sorry, did you come up with a theory of consciousness that could show this? Dawkins is an atheist and presumably subscribes to functionalism (that consciousness is information-processing software), so his conclusions here are entirely coherent.

@thomasforth Ahead of the curve and standing up for the country as always Tom! This is a crucial, and not enough in the ecosystem are open enough to admit ARIA's been completely co-opted from it's original purpose. All the best. 🫡

Big scoop 😉 in The Guardian on how Aria, the UK's newest science and innovation funding body is spending £50m outside of the UK, mostly in the USA. theguardian.com/technology/202…

@Jameswise @thomasforth As far as I understand it, DARPA invests a total of $0 in Europe. 🤷‍♂️ Happy to hear more. The article is completely right. The point of ARIA was to setup a completely new research organisation, allowing for informal, unlikely academic bets separate to UKRI. It's been co-opted now.

@WoodstockComp @thomasforth I’m not sure how relevant it is to the article above but what on earth! DARPA funds huge amounts of research in Europe and there are many US-Govt backed investment firms investing in European frontier technology. Smartly so from their perspective.

@MWStory Surely you of all people know ARIA was not set up to fund failing US businesses and "Renaissance Philanthropy"? Why are ARIA funding more teams East of Suez than North of the Watford Gap?

Sad that these people are so lost in a fog of entitlement that they forget the purpose of research spending: to benefit from the research! Not to employ people who’d otherwise have nothing to do theguardian.com/technology/202…

Do you think if you'd asked an executive of a FTSE 100 company in 2019 "How are you addressing the risk that a future government will reverse this green legislation you're pivotting the whole company towards?" you'd have got a less-evasive and deflecting answer?
Tim Newman@whitesundesert

They’re ripping on this woman but I have seen a thousand middle and senior corporate managers do exactly the same when asked about some part of their grand plan that doesn’t make sense. Britain’s (and much of the West’s) entire managerial class runs on pure bullshit.

@whitesundesert But they are being abandoned because ESG has come under question (I would say rightly) from American investors. Not because of the UK government changing tac? 😅 And also EV mandates are still here (and there 🇺🇸🇪🇺🌏) last time I checked?

@WoodstockComp Risks still need to be evaluated and managed even if the likelihood of a catastrophic outcome is low. A lot of companies positioned themselves around EV mandates and ESG scores, both of which are being slowly abandoned.
