@resentfulincel there is also still something novel about 'mundane' early 00s nostalgia. the only other major example i can think of is first episode of TLOU having references to the Atkins Diet & that post 9/11 gungho American patriotism

@World3tk Yeah, and honestly, I noticed a lot of "oh wow yeah that was there in 2002" things in BCS, and the only difference if they did a show set in 2013 is that I was 21 and not 10, so I'd have a better memory of what to expect in a show about 2013. Like the Jack White revival.

Better Call Saul started airing in 2015 and taking place in 2002. It’s 13 years. It also wasn’t made explicitly for nostalgia purposes, and is about adults, whose fashion trends and lifestyles change more slowly than teenagers.
cowboy online@SensitiveManlet

In the 90’s and 00’s, “That 70’s Show” was a nostalgia piece despite being set only 20-30 years before it premiered. “Better Call Saul is a 00’s period piece, but nobody considers it “nostalgic”. The world just hasn’t changed as much.

@FTX_YoungBoy @Tetradugenikid i was born in 1991 but i almost have more nostalgia for stuff like the 80s transformers cartoon or He-Man (the latter I never actually watched), i think bc i only experienced it as this echo from older cousins, so it was more of a pure aesthetic my imagination latched onto

The muppet babies were on tv constantly until the year 2000, but you never see nostalgia for them, aside from people who became sexually strange due to exposure at the wrong time during development. Not saying they're deserving of anything, just an observation

@moto_motes we're 26 years away from the 20th century & already ppl have a totally distorted conception of what the timeline was like. things rapidly turn into myth & legend even in an age of unprecedented digital archiving

Convinced everyone on both sides of this debate are channeling 1950s nostalgia they saw on Nick at Nite as kids. 50 year old men very likely had working mothers in the 80s. We need to recalibrate our sense of time.
will@will_nba_hater

Really funny discourse going around Twitter right now of 50 year old men saying “my mom had a home cooked meal for us to eat every night, why don’t people cook anymore, you’re wasting so much money on takeout” Because all the women have to work full time now to pay rent lol

@iron_redux The fact that the vision was so vivid but also so mundane made it feel more real to me. Like I was remembering just being some random old guy on the verge of death, not a famous king or film star

@iron_redux I've had recurring dreams (and seen things on substances) of 'womb memories' & also of being a 93 year old man in a retirement home in the late 80s, walking across a mall parking lot with great difficulty

one thing to note here is that everyone always talks about low unemployment but no one ever talks about the quality of employment most new jobs are either gig economy or healthcare, neither of which pay well when it comes to a high inflation environment

@ScreenDamaged seems to be some weird combo of the (noble) desire to retire before 40 + brainfried by The Discourse into thinking they need to be Dubai rich to escape the permanent underclass + lots of corporate nerds on here trying to signal financial superiority out of pure animus for life

People keep saying this invented the powerchord, but it’s a Dsus2 into an E, then a Dsus2 into an A, then a Dsus2 into an appregiated B7…a power chord is a very specific thing, a 1st and 5th with sometimes another 1st, like a triad minus the third…you can’t just say things

Link Wray, performing “Rumble” in 1974. In the 1950s when it was released, it was censored. It became the most banned song in history. It had NO LYRICS.

Have never rly agreed w/ takes of the "if someone annoys you it's only bc you see yourself in them" variety. Do you see yourself in the ants invading your picnic? Do you see yourself in the table you stubbed your toe on? Well maybe if it has one of those glass surfaces

These people were not skinny they were lean and athletic with good muscle tone, bone structure, and posture. They don’t really exist anymore due to modern food and weightlifting trends so people now are either very muscular, very skinny, or fat. This is normal and healthy.

@mrwittmayer If you ever watch old film reels a lot of the men seem to be incredibly skinny by modern standards This has led me to believe that being "twinkish" is actually the more normal and natural way for a man to be. Thoughts?

@_SatanWatch pretty much, i've seen both sides firsthand. being prominent on social media is predicated on using the internet a lot, thus social media creates the illusion that the only lifestyles in 2026 are ones centred around phones & computers

There's a whole parallel universe out there of train-hopping vagabonds with their own lore, memes, influencers and even "discourse cycles" but they have little to no overlap with the Twitter population. They're mostly on Instagram and YouTube. We're so sheltered on this app.
