OpenAI and Anthropic are effectively telling the market they can't solve every problem with a generic AI coworker.
You don't pour billions into massive forward-deployed joint ventures if you think the next model release is going to take care of it.
In the cloud supercycle, semis led and software followed (and you didn't need Qualcomm or ARM to tell you the value was migrating up the stack).
In AI, the infra layer itself is telling us the application layer is a separate, massive opportunity they can't fully capture.
a16z's @joeschmidtiv on why the app layer isn't dead: a16z.news/p/avoiding-dea…

leopold aschenbrenner just released his fund's latest investment portfolio & honestly its not what i expected
he's gone massively short the entire semiconductor supply chain but also revealed what he thinks the next AI constraint is:
> biggest surprise: he's short intel. he sold out of his massive Intel position that made him famous.
> he's also gone short $9B worth of puts in nvidia, asml, amd, oracle and van ecks semi etf.
> biggest long positions are in memory (sandisk) and power (bloom) with a combined $3.5B value (these are his next bottlenecks)
> he trimmed ~$1B of bloom energy position but still holds $1 billion of it. his single largest long holding.
> his lumentum position is gone (bearish optics?)
> the one consistent thesis is he continues to hold data center bets (ai labs will still need gpus)
> fund is now worth $13.7 billion (notional). it was just $5.5B 3 months ago and $220 million ~1yr ago

THIS GUY VIBE CODED A WEBSITE WHERE ANYONE ON THE INTERNET CAN FEED HIS CAT
you go to the site, press a button, and his cat's automatic feeder dispenses food in real time
there's a live camera so you can watch the cat walk up and eat what you just gave it
and it's not just his cat. other cat owners can connect their feeders too so you can feed random cats around the world from your browser
he's also adding computer vision to detect when a cat is actually near the feeder so only videos with cats in them get shown at the top
a weight scale and cat recognition is also being added for a "greed leaderboard" tracking which cat eats the most
completely useless, zero business model, and no monetization strategy
and yet this is the kind of weird internet project that goes viral overnight because everyone immediately gets it and wants to try it (including me)

After 5,000 founder meetings, we discovered that many of the world’s greatest builders are blessed (and cursed) with a mind that is thinking 24/7.
There is no off switch.
Notebooks kept by the bed for ideas that arrive at 3am and won't survive until morning. Phones full of voice memos recorded at red lights. Dinners going cold because they've pulled out a napkin to sketch something.
They are constantly told they are “half-present” or “mentally somewhere else”.
Workaholics force themselves to be at the desk. The trait here is different: the problem follows them uninvited into every room of their life. They couldn't put it down even if they wanted to. The conscious decision to stop working doesn't actually stop the part of the mind that's doing the work.
Most people view this as a failure of work-life balance and try to fix it. But you can't compartmentalise your way to a genuine breakthrough.

Had a wealthy friend tell me that the ability to decrease time to any outcome is the one skill behind every successful person he knows.
A few I apply constantly:
- Decreasing the time it takes you to get out of a bad state will make you emotionally resilient
- Decreasing the time it takes you to go from idea to executive will make you wealthy
- Decreasing the time it takes you to turn a failure into a lesson will thicken your skin faster than anything else

There’s a whole community of people who find peace in not understanding SF startup billboards…and I think that’s beautiful
Abhinav@Abhinavstwt
I sometimes wonder what a non-tech person thinks when they see these billboards Do they even understand any of it
