Just to add to the chaos I'm now being told by multiple sources from different parties that canvass returns for Makerfield show Restore significantly outperforming the 7% revealed in the Times poll. I suspect that's what's underpinning the current Reform meltdown.

@Eddystone506 Comparable European economies have stagnated even with all the benefits of EU membership. So UK may have grown a bit more, but also pay £20bn of public finances so cost benefit analysis doesn’t appear very exciting

@JeremyVineOn5 No reason to assume we’d have to adopt the euro. The EU is theoretically rigid but the member states have shown an amazing ability to compromise over the years.

It's reasonably likely we will rejoin at some point given huge age skew in support for Brexit and geopolitical trends
But it's not going to happen quickly both because EU won't want us back until UK public opinion clearly in favour and neither left nor right bloc aligned on it

But on T&Cs, polls indicate that UK voters would overwhelmingly not accept joining without special opt outs (ie adopting euro and not joining Schengen). I think we agree on all of this so not sure why you’re being all angsty?

Brexit is falling apart and its proponents are desperate. All EEC/ EU members - since 1957 (!) - sign Treaty that refers to "ever closer union among the peoples of Europe." It's about sharing values + economic + cultural exchange. It has no legal significance or enforceability.

FYI, this is kier Starmer, the prime minister of the UK, kneeling for fentanyl addict George Floyd, who died of an overdose. He hasn’t said a word about Henry Nowak, the British kid who was stabbed to death by an Indian man in his country. Henry drowned in his own blood, and Kier can’t be bothered to even give his condolences.

To summarise what I found in Makerfield: * It's Reform territory. In any other context this would be an easy Reform win * The Burnham effect is real. Local people view him as one of their own. * Restore have more of a presence that I anticipated. They may well be a factor
