For real though, is there literally ANY criticism of this book which doesn't come down to "Diamond didn't make Europeans evil enough" (the knock from the Left) or "Diamond didn't make Europeans clever enough" (the knock from the Right)? Note that I'm talking only about the preferred ideological undergirdings of the alternative theories and not nitpickery about specific claims. I'd be interested in hearing from someone who is broadly sympathetic to Diamond's (perceived) ideological team but thinks he generally did a shoddy job.

@ShitpostRock2 I think it does depend on what one defines as “fun.” I definitely felt more engaged fighting, for example, Messmer, however, I did enjoy that this fight forced me to fully rethink my build and approach, which in turn sent me on a hunt for certain items. As one of many, I like it.

Listen, I COMPLETELY understand if you feel that way. But no, listen carefully. We've been saying for YEARS that game journalists are posers who despise this hobby. Mixtape is absolute proof of that. This is a billionaire nepo project that is 3 hours long and that you don't even really "play." It was immediately astroturfed to fuck and back, called "one of the games of the generation," couldn't even bother to add a fail state or something known as "gameplay systems," includes the most quirk-ass possible millennial-hipster writing and teenagers tonguing, all presented alongside the lie that it's an "indie project." There has never been a more direct example of everything wrong with games journalism, and that's saying a lot because they gave Veilguard a 9 out of 10 while games like Black Myth Wukong and Crimson Desert are 6's & 7's. "Mixtape" is being hailed as a masterpiece and given 10's across the board while its billionaire publisher lines their pockets with cute lootboxes filled with custom gadgets and CD players. There is one reason, and one reason alone that they like it... and that's because it didn't "waste their time" by making them do something they loathe: playing a video game.

Examples of CCs, XBox and Unreal referring to the game as indie btw. The game looks well crafted and will probably be fun for those who like these sort of experiences! The point of my post was saying that they are presenting as indie/benefiting from being (mis)labeled as such.

I hate to my negative about content here but this is an actual industry plant. It’s ok to like this sort of game, but how it’s presenting itself hurts actual indie games. - real licensed music - massive array of custom assets and cutscenes, fully voiced too - insanely pricey press kits sent out to small and big CCs - presents itself as “indie”. This is not “indie”. This is a refined product that was made for millions. Most likely a medium sized team of 12-30 full time for years. This kind of low hanging fruit stealing + indie labeling hurts actual small dedicated teams of real game devs. There will be actual indie devs that miss out on awards this season because of this extremely well funded AA title masquerading as an indie.
