Before any electronic product can be legally sold in the US, it must pass safety, emissions, and security testing at an FCC-recognized lab. During that process, labs gain access to the device's internal specifications, firmware, source code, and hardware architecture. Complete technical blueprints. The FCC's own national security advisory states that Chinese labs with access to this process can compromise device security before a single unit ever reaches a consumer. Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group, breached the networks of nine major US telecom companies in 2024 and was still active in 2025. A separate Chinese group compromised over 50 telecoms and government agencies across 42 countries in early 2026. Chinese state-linked hackers have embedded passive backdoors deep inside telecom backbone infrastructure globally, designed to sit dormant and activate on command. The FCC is not overreacting. It is catching up. China banned US labs from its own certification process a decade ago. The US is only now implementing the same geographic restriction in return. 75% of America's electronics were being certified in a country whose government has been actively hacking American telecom infrastructure for years.
