@dhavalkulkarni@ravindersingal We (me, my wife & our 2 yr son ) regularly book cab from Mumbai-Pune and every time we have noticed that the Uber driver is either tired or sleepy. We have stopped booking Ubers in morning because of this. Coz it’s gets very annoying to keep check on driver all the time.
The Rescue
With no help forthcoming, I called up Shri Ravinder Singal, IPS and Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) (@ravindersingal), and managed to convey the situation to him. Soon after, I received a call from Tanaji Chikhale, the SP and a team including PSI Anil Shinde and head constable Bhaskar Khade was on the spot. The policemen were helpful and courteous. They also arranged for a 108 ambulance, which took us to the MGM hospital at Kamothe where my wife and brother-in-law arrived. I wish to record my gratitude for the police team and the ambulance staff, especially the driver.
The doctors at the MGM hospital said that as per protocol, they would have to admit me for at least 24 hours. This was not viable since I stay at the other end of town (actually, another city). So, we sought a DMA and proceeded to Bombay Hospital.
Meanwhile, I had called up my colleague and friend @sahiljoshii and others in the India Today group. My colleague Priyanka Doiphode promptly fetched the office mediclaim details in case I needed to be admitted.
Sahil suggested that I should head to Bombay Hospital. There, the doctors made me undergo x-rays and clinical examinations. I have blunt trauma to the chest but no broken bones or ribs and have been asked to take painkillers.
Many thanks to Raj Chengappa Sir, Ranjit Sahaya Sir, M G Arun Sir, Sahil Joshi, Mandar Deodhar, Priyanka Doiphode, A M Ashwin for their support and logistical aid.
The Culprits
We have had providential escape, but here are some issues and questions:
Highway Police:
Over-speeding, lane cutting and heavy vehicles taking the wrong lane are almost a way of life on the expressway. This was once a signature piece of infrastructure but is now turning into a death trap. Why are these violations allowed to continue?
RTO, MSF and IRB:
Your staff saw the crash yet did not send first aid.
Uber:
How about making speed governors mandatory for cars on your platform?
Also, a dashcam with AI-based technology to check if your drivers are speaking on the phone while they are at the wheel.
Your second driver accepted the ride, yet refused to take my calls and then cancelled it. Is it professional and even humane to refuse aid to an accident victim?
Your drivers need some rest between intercity rides. They are humans and not machines. Most road accidents occur due to human error.
I have received a call from Tata AIG (@TATAAIGIndia) saying that they will reimburse my medical costs as part of their accident insurance with Uber. I shall file the claim once I feel better. Let us see how it goes.
I followed all official protocols to get help which failed after which I had to resort to activating personal connections.
Jai Hind!
*The Accident*
My 11-year-old daughter and I had a near death experience on the Mumbai- Pune express highway on November 19 (Sunday).
This is our account and I hope that @nitin_gadkari@CMOMaharashtra@Devendra_Office@TransportofMAHA and @Uber@Uber_Support shall take the necessary action to ensure that no one else has to undergo this ordeal.

On Saturday, I took the train for Pune to pick-up my daughter. I am a great fan of the @RailMinIndia as the trains between Mumbai-Pune are by and large punctual, safe, and help avoid traffic jams. But our train tickets were wait-listed and hence we had to book an Uber cab for Mumbai.
The driver was very polite and rated at 4.93. When my daughter showed some signs of motion sickness, he voluntarily stopped the cab before a chemist for me to buy some medicines.
Enroute, he began speaking on the phone. I find this disconcerting and unsafe but did not want an argument or escalation in the presence of my daughter.
Soon after we took the Expressway, the driver began yawning. He also drove rashly at times, cut lanes, and almost brushed against a truck. I asked him if he was sleepy or drowsy--I had been able to gather from his conversations on the phone and our own small talk that he had come to Pune after picking up a customer early in the morning. But he said he was ok--the yawning was being induced by the AC! I asked him to stop the car and splash some water on his face, which he did.
I engaged him in small talk to keep him awake. Soon after we descended the ghat and reached Khopoli, there was a truck bang in the middle of the carriageway. Even as I yelled at him to watch out, our car smashed into the rear end of the truck. The airbag activated and slammed against my chest. I was dazed and in immense pain from the impact but instinctively looked at the rear seat to check on my daughter. She was rattled but kept calm. Thankfully, the driver was OK. We were incredibly lucky to have not been tail-ended by another speeding car on the busy highway.
People constantly ask me “given how good AI is at coding is it still worth it to learn to code?”—
Are you crazy? The ROI on learning to code has 10x’d with AI.
