AU Rejects Draft Endorsement of Macky Sall for UN Secretary-General Post The African Union Commission has confirmed that a rushed attempt to endorse former Senegalese President Macky Sall as Africa's candidate for the next United Nations Secretary-General has failed. The AU Commission stated that the draft decision—submitted under a "silence procedure" on 26 March—did not secure consensus. By the close of business on 27 March, twenty (20) Member States broke the silence and objected, preventing adoption of the proposal. The unusually tight 24-hour window for objections, described by observers as almost unprecedented, saw resistance from countries across multiple regions, including Senegal itself. The Commission informed Ethiopia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and all Permanent Missions to the AU that the circulated draft on Sall's candidacy "has not been adopted." Macky Sall, who served as Senegal's president from 2012 to 2024 and previously chaired the AU, was nominated earlier in March by Burundi in its capacity as AU Chair. However, the move sparked divisions across the continent, with questions raised about the process and the level of genuine support. The development leaves Sall without official African Union backing as the race to succeed António Guterres (whose term ends in December 2026) continues. The failure highlights ongoing challenges in forging continental consensus on high-level international candidacies.

Reset mpaka walinzi.
