Secondly, this sounds like it was the first time the librarian ever received such a query, so the books can't just instantly materialize.

It's especially shocking that the librarian couldn't help since "I am an adult who can barely read and need help" is one of the few remaining essential functions of a library I can imagine not having been largely replaced by the Internet.

Adult literacy student—27, male, has a high school degree, but really can barely read—went to his local library to find some books that would supplement the tutoring he is doing with us. Anyone want to venture a guess as to how that went? Did the librarian know about the adult literacy crisis? Did he/she welcome him warmly and have ideas for him on the ready? Did the library have curriculum that would help an adult coming to them for help reading? Or did they just vaguely direct him to the children’s section, leaving him entirely uncomfortable and unassisted —and hesitant as an adult male to go into a children’s space? (“Maybe next time I could bring my nephew so I could go in there,” he said.)

AI has genuinely *increased* my workload as a developer. Used to be I could take a reasonable amount of time to ship a feature or bugfix, really sit with it. Now that we're expected to use AI to ship faster, I have to spend more time and effort reading through AI output daily.
