Game: Valorant AC: Vanguard (VGK) Today’s Vanguard anti-cheat update blocked the majority of DMA firmwares using SATA/NVMe. VGK suddenly triggered an IOMMU restart warning in-game, after which the DMA firmware becomes completely unusable, even without the game running or after uninstalling Vanguard. Only fix is a full OS reinstall. It’s using IOMMU to create read blocks, which permanently breaks the majority of almost all SATA/NVMe firmwares once triggered. 🚨VALORANT / VANGUARD SITUATION🚨 Getting a lot of questions about the Vanguard drama this week, so here's the rundown + my honest take, especially for fellow creators. 📌WHAT HAPPENED A post went viral (9M+ views) claiming Valorant's anti-cheat (Vanguard) pushed an update that "permanently broke" people's storage drives, only fix being a full Windows reinstall. People started calling Vanguard malware. x.com/ogisadaDMA/sta… Riot responded saying it's overblown: the update targeted expensive hardware cheating devices and made them stop working. They claim no normal PC got bricked, the effect is reversible, and non-cheaters aren't affected. x.com/riotgames/stat… Today's incident probably did mostly hit cheaters, and Riot is likely telling the truth that no normal PC got destroyed. There are also a lot of scary posts going around, people claiming it wiped their work files and production databases, others throwing out lawsuit threats. ⚠️WHY IT STILL MATTERS Riot just proved their anti-cheat CAN reach into your PC and change how your physical hardware behaves, through an update you never see or approve, on a machine you own. That's exactly the behavior people associate with malware. And Vanguard has misfired before, it false-flagged a totally different game (Deadlock) a few weeks back because of a supposed RARE bug and locked people out. (x.com/deteccphilippe…) ⚖️THE LEGAL ANGLE A lot of people are arguing it's straight up not legal, the logic being it's YOUR computer and messing with hardware you own (even a cheater's) could count as damaging property. People are citing the US Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, EU GDPR, etc. 🧭THE MORAL SIDE There's a difference between "we caught you cheating, you're banned" and "we're going to reach into your machine and break your stuff." The first is fair, their game, their rules. The second is them appointing themselves judge AND punisher and deciding they get to "damage" your property. That's a line a lot of people feel a company shouldn't cross, no matter how much you hate cheaters. And going forward, the same power that "breaks" a cheater's device today could be pointed at anything tomorrow. They've built and shown off something that can/could be weaponized, and we're just supposed to trust they'll always use it responsibly, despite it already misfiring before. The real question isn't "did they brick PCs today," it's do you trust a game company with that level of control over your PC, and to never make a mistake or misuse it? 📽️FOR FELLOW CREATORS The thing Vanguard targeted is DMA (Direct Memory Access), basically a way for hardware to talk directly to your PC's memory. Cheaters abuse it with pricey devices, but plenty of legit hardware uses DMA too, and some capture cards do as well, especially internal PCIe ones. A capture card is NOT a cheat device. But the whole worry is anti-cheat being aggressive enough to one day false-flag legit DMA hardware by mistake. So know what you're running. ✅MY ADVICE • Back up your files regularly • Don't keep important files on the PC you play on • Best option: play Valorant on a separate PC/device that is clean with nothing important on it That way if a bug hits or they fumble an update and you get false-flagged, your files are safe and you can do a full recovery / reinstall. Honestly it's ridiculous we have to go this far to play a video game. Riot shot themselves in the foot with their initial quoted post (x.com/riotgames/stat…) and I think this pushes a lot of people to uninstall. They could have been a lot more professional and specific as to what their new vanguard update really does instead of posting something like that which caused even innocent users to panic. Now they are doing damage control and have to clean up their own mess. What a PR disaster. ✅MY NEXT ADVICE Don't be an idiot and cheat. Is your life really such a failure that you have to succumb to cheating in a video game? 👤WHAT I'M DOING I've uninstalled Valorant from my main PC, too many work files to risk a false flag forcing a full Windows reinstall. I also do a lot of AI-related works to help improve my workflows as a content creator and losing all of my data and work is just far too risky for me. Instead, I've put a clean install of Valorant on a separate older setup (my OG streaming PC) that has nothing important on it. That's the risk level I'm comfortable with. Not telling anyone to quit, do what's right for you. Just want you all informed. Stay safe and seriously, back your stuff up. And most important thing, don't be a loser in life and cheat in video games🤦‍♂️

@YoutuberAio @Needthatasss @PastaLording Iirc DMA cheats are loaded when the PC is turned on. So they would be running before Valorant/Vanguard is running. As far as I’m aware at least.

"just don't cheat" I got hit with a false positive once for having cheat engine active on borderlands 2 while the league client was open I have as much faith in vanguard as the community does with Israel
