Crypto industry is struggling to define what a "moat" is for open-source systems. It’s really hard It reminds me of when I was investing in open source back in the day. Most VCs didn’t believe you could monetize it until IBM bought Red Hat for $34B. And for all the purists out there, Red Hat was not strictly open source. They monetized a whole lot for reliability and support. My mental model is this: a moat you can't monetize doesn't matter. That is why I focus on fees captured by protocols. Everything else is theory

Ok, I honestly don’t know how Hyperliquid raised zero capital and launched what they did. Every UX thing we want/need is an arm and leg – and it adds up. My only conclusion is when you’re EVM/Arbitrum there’s just way more available free tooling and inherently less friction. Maybe one advantage of EVM. And then if the product is good enough – the demand is such that users go through whatever friction (caused by not paying for these brand name integrations). I’m proud of what Fogo was able to do with less than $15MM – but kudos to them.
