Had a great time at @GriffithObserv on Friday strolling around in my NEW @Margaritaville FLIGHT SUIT! These patches are off the hook. Palm Tree NASA Vectors, Surfboard rockets, Parrotheads with space helmets... Great work Margaritaville. You & Jimmy Buffet make space cool!

Thank you @BillNye for all your championing of space and science👏🫡
Planetary Society@exploreplanets

After 15 years of leadership, Bill Nye is stepping down as The Planetary Society's CEO and moving into a newly created role as our Chief Ambassador — continuing to champion space science, curiosity, and public engagement in the way only Bill can. At the same time, we’re thrilled to share that Jennifer Vaughn will step into the role of CEO on February 17, 2025. Jennifer has spent more than two decades helping shape nearly every part of The Planetary Society as our Chief Operating Officer, and she’s been a steady, thoughtful leader behind so much of our growth and impact. It's hard to put into words all the things Bill has done during his tenure at The Planetary Society, but here are some highlights: ☀️ Championed and launched LightSail 2, proving solar sailing works 🌱 Pushed forward the search for life beyond Earth through exoplanet research and new science grants  🛰️ Advocated for major NASA missions like New Horizons, Europa Clipper, and Mars microphones ☄️ Advanced planetary defense and asteroid discovery ⚖️  Built a stronger voice for space science in Congress 👨‍🔬 Expanded The Planetary Society’s public engagement through events, education, and digital communities 🪐 Grew an amazing team doing meaningful, mission-driven work And so much more (including moonlighting as our handyman and fixing anything that needed fixing). We’re so grateful for Bill’s leadership and for his continued support as our Chief Ambassador, we are also excited for what’s ahead with Jenn at the helm. Onward. 🚀 Learn more: planetary.org/articles/the-n…

Launch delayed 'til March due to hydrogen leaks, a balky hatch, need to launch a crew to Space Station, and geometry with the Moon. Next opportunities: March 6, 7, 8, 9, 11. For the familes & friends it's a big midwinter disruption of plans. For the Artemis crew & @NASA it's safety and another month of training and preparation to get it all right. The Moon will patiently wait. (photo NASA KSC)

“Artemis will live on for decades as we explore and realize the economic and scientific potential of the lunar surface.” -NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman@NASAAdmin

The Artemis vision began with President Trump, but the SLS architecture and its components long predate his administration, with much of the heritage clearly traced back to the Shuttle era. As I stated during my hearings, and will say again, this is the fastest path to return humans to the Moon and achieve our near-term objectives through at least Artemis V, but it is not the most economic path and certainly not the forever path. The flight rate is the lowest of any NASA-designed vehicle, and that should be a topic of discussion. It is why we undertake wet dress rehearsals, Pre-FRR, and FRR, and why we will not press to launch until we are absolutely ready. The President’s National Space Policy envisions a Moon base, with repeated and affordable missions to the lunar environment. Along that journey, some functions that NASA has performed in the past and present may move to industry in the future, and that is when NASA recalibrates toward the near-impossible and undertakes the next grand endeavor. Where Apollo ended at 17, Artemis will live on for decades as we explore and realize the economic and scientific potential of the lunar surface. It is where we will test hardware and operations, including resource manufacturing, nuclear power, and propulsion, the tools necessary to undertake human missions to Mars. In short, Artemis II will be a historic mission, but it is still just the beginning. Where we go in the years ahead will inspire generations to come.

Today, we pause to remember. 🕯️ On @NASA’s Day of Remembrance, we honor the crews of Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia, and all members of the NASA family lost in pursuit of exploration. Their legacy guides our commitment to learning, vigilance, and safety as we reach farther.

Recognizing excellence matters. Yesterday, I flew Ashley and Daniel from the @NASAKennedy workforce in my F-5s. Ashley has served at NASA for almost 9 years, and currently works in Systems Engineering and Integration for Exploration Ground Systems, helping ensure the infrastructure behind exploration missions is ready when it’s needed. Daniel has served at NASA for 23 years, currently working as a Manager of the Ground and Mission Operations Office for Commercial Crew, supporting the day-to-day execution that keeps human spaceflight moving safely and reliably. Ashley and Daniel represent the kind of talent and commitment that exists across NASA. They’re the first of what I hope will be hundreds of opportunities to recognize and reward the people who show up every day to do hard things and change the world.
