When differential geometer Kang-Tae Kim was still a student, he once had the chance to meet the legendary Chinese mathematician Shiing-Shen Chern. Chern was already a towering figure in mathematics, known for his deep and beautiful contributions to differential geometry. But despite his stature, he was warm, approachable, and genuinely fond of students. Trying to make the young Kim feel at ease, Chern struck up a casual conversation. With a gentle smile, he asked, “How did you do in your complex analysis course?” Kim hesitated. Of all his subjects, this was the one he wasn’t proud of. Slightly embarrassed, he admitted, “My grade was a C.” For a brief moment, there was silence.
